Woman killed at fairground ride at Dublin O2

A 31-YEAR-OLD WOMAN has died after falling from a ride at the O2 arena in Dublin.

The incident happened at around 11.20pm last night at the complex in Dublin’s docklands. The woman was taken to hospital and the scene was sealed off.

It’s not known which ride the woman had been on before her fall. However, it is thought a number of people would have been in the area at the time.

The scene has not yet reopened after forensic examination by gardaí

Terrible news for her family.

That's very sad news . To hear of a young woman enjoying herself at a fairground and the this happens.

I don't know if it was the "Dublin Eye" that it happened, but that uses closed pods, not just those open seats, so that would be safe even in a rainstorm. Great view probably. There was no wind last night, so no reason to close it.

Can't really say anything until we know more.

Poor girl and her family. RIP.

I know the womans mother. She was an only child and the mother was widowed. Very sad.

My bus went passed the O2 last night around this time and there were a few indipendent carnival rides outside to cash in on Britney Spears. I was shocked to think they were running them in this weather, it was obviously a huge health risk. Such a shame it turned out to be true.

Weirdly there was a girl killed a gig in The Point back in 1996 who'd probably have been close to 31 y/o today had she lived.

Anyway, not a great safety record for that place.

Smashing Pumpkins? I was there... In fairness 2 deaths in 15yrs is not terrible. I would also point out that security has been top notch ever since and this happened outside...

Theres carnivals, fairs and theme parks all over the world that run all the time. A bit of rain should be no issue if everything is as it should be.

so with the liffey bursting its banks, a garda getting swept away and drowned, the CDF deployed, crisis plans in operation, the city at a standstill, all the warnings that were being given out and everything else that happened.
in the biggest rainstorm on record you think its wise for an outdoor fairground to be operating just metres from the liffey? even though someone was killed?

I live next door to the o2 and it has to be said at the time when she was killed (after the concert I think) it hadn't been raining for a few hours and there wasn't much water on the ground down there.

But obviously something went wrong.

To be fair, it's a bit presumptuous to say that the fairground should have been closed.. unless of course you know that conditions there were dangerous due to the weather.

This is a tragic incident but I don't see what it has to do with last nights rain.

i'm not saying that it was definitely the cause, but i hardly think its a major leap to be honest.

No I wasn't, and I'm not trying to suggest that the weather was any less severe than it was. I just think it's slightly unfair to lambaste the fairground for not closing. Some areas were affected more than others, and the entire city shouldn't come to a standstill just because of that. Nobody has made an official association between the woman in this case losing her life, and last nights weather, which is why I think it's presumptuous of you to do so.

there was no wind so there was no real reason why it should have been closed. But we don't know the details yet.
there may have been no fault with the machine. Was there a fault? was there alcohol or drugs being consumed the the person? was vandalism of horseplay taking place?
these are all the questions we must be asking until the details are made public.

does anyone know the extent of the injuries sustained? was she taken to the hostipal or was she pronounced on the spot? The wheel is quite high so i anyone plummeting from the top would not have much of a chance really. I know the one in waterford has no enclosure and if someone were to become dislodged, on the way down they would be pulled into the working parts that rotate the wheel. Although in this case is believe that the individual went to the ground.
I see a lot of fairground rides that are looking very shoddy and worn so this may be the cause also. Mechanical failure.

Remember the thing in Borrisokane where a pod became detatched and was flung through the air and struck people when it landed the. Also the thing in tramore when a pod came down from Above and demolished the operator. These were all cases of mechanical failure. It will be interesting to see what the casue has been here.

Typical that the thread couldn't just be an RIP for the girl.

We have to wait and see what the investigation comes up with, it may have had nothing at all to do with the weather.

Poor girl, terrible tragedy for her family.

I think she just fell from the ride when it was moving, safety issue really nothing to do with the weather.

I always wonder just how stringent the safety measures are on those carnivals.

They're hardly a Disney World.
