    can anyone tell me the best way or cheapest or even free way to get Excel on mac,
    I only need it for a few basic things and don't want to be paying to much for it,
    Even an old version would do for what i need.

    Free doubtful. Have a look for OpenOffice and try star office if it's still going. Free and make excel compatible docs.

    Google Docs may also be suitable if you only want an occasional spreadsheet without too many complex formulae.

    Have a look at LibreOffice its maintained and more up to date then openOffice.

    I use neo-office, had it the last few years
    It's possible there are better free versions out there but it does the job
