    "Doom and Gloom"

I sh1t you not. This house is on Brewery Road just off the N11. It's the main road to the Sandyford Luas. The house is opposite the Leopardstown Inn and back towards the N11 about 50m.

At first I thought it was a joke, but the sign is metal and fixed to the brickwork gatepost and has been there for years.

When you live in the country it is actually beneficial for a number of reasons to have a name on a house. Nothing snobby about it tbh.
For emergency services I'd imagine it'd be more useful to have a house number and road name. In rural Australia, houses are numbered according to their km marking on a road - a much better system. I can't think of any advantages to having a name over this.

Also house names aren't exactly satnav friendly.

The owner of a pig farm near here built a classic example of bungalow blitz complete with columns beside the main door. They don't actually have a name on the house, but everyone in the area has adopted the name I gave it: Southpork.:D

Not all house names are due to snob factor.

My grandmother moved into town after my grandad passed away and named the house she bought "Vinrose" after my grandad Vincent and herself, Mary-Rose.
