......feel angry at people who have a job?

Lately I'm getting a lot of grief and **** from people who are unemployed. Many of them made more money than I did during the Celtic Tiger years, but obviously pissed it way. Now that I'm fairly okay running my own business and adapting to changed circumstances, I'm a little bit sick and tired of the begrudgery that unemployed people display towards me. I've done nothing wrong.

Tonight, I was abused to high heaven by a couple of assholes, (that are unemployed) who seem to dislike the fact that I'm in the pub when they are. The difference is, I can actually afford it and I doubt they can.

Is this a normal and healthy disconnect or am I being unfair or are the people who are unemployed, just angry and lashing out.

For the record, I was unemployed after leaving college in 1993 and then availed of Government incentives to start my own business. Still going, but got feck all out of the boom. However, the recession has been fairly good to me.

I'm unemployed. I'm envious of my friends who have jobs, but I don't take the p*ss out of them for it, doesn't make sense to do so.

I will say this though, a friend of mine works in a McDonald's, and does nothing but bitch and moan about how much he hates it, and how he'd rather be unemployed (Wont quit though). It really drives me insane, he complains about having to work weekends, hell, I'd work every day of the week for a solid pay.

Did you not tell those two unemployed wretches that you are paying for their drink.

I am sure you would, right now. Give it some time and the novelty of wasting your life cooking up transfats for ungrateful pigs for a very basic wage while your efforts help generate billions for the corporate bosses will soon leave you in the same state of mind as your mate.

Being unemployed (for those who want to make something of themselves) can be pretty miserable but the freedom of not having to live your life to someone else's timetable is great.

None of what you said is why my mate is so miserable though. He admits that he always does a half arsed job, shows up late, and is rude to customers, yet he doesn't get why the managers are always giving out to him. Its a continuous cycle of; not bothering to work, getting yelled at, getting pissed off & deciding to do a worse, job, getting yelled at, and so on. The phrase "Do a job right the first time" has no bearing on him whatsoever.

Unfortunately, there are very few people who are able to live life without having some form of income by working for someone else.

If you lived out in the sticks with a few hectares of land and became virtually self sufficient then you could have the pleasure of working only for yourself and paying no taxes etc.

The rest of the debt slaves just have to slog on, that includes "self employed" who are in reality working for the bank that financed their business in the first place.

Yes. Hell yes. Look at the outcry towards the public sector. Its a great example. Where was the moans about them in 2007? or 2003? or 2001? .. wasnt any. Because people were happy earning their own bit.

Truth be known, while obviously some pissed it away. The same people who didnt would still give you loads for having a job.

    Utter BS op,
Lets apply logic here. You (a working man) were in a pub. They (unemployed) were also in a pub. How in blue hell can they goto a pub if times are that rough ... that if cents count ... that they can give YOU a hard time for BEING MORE FINANCIALLY CAPABLE to goto a pub while they too are in it too.....Think about that.

Its begrudery and jealousy. Also throw some grade-A typical life bullsh*t in there. After all, where was the moans outta people 3-4 years ago? Wasnt none. Because people were too busy getting their share of the pie.

I've been getting a lot of grief lately too....ever since people found out I'm spending quite a bit of money on a new motorbike. But...I work hard, save hard, invest well and don't drink/smoke/use drugs. So why should I feel guilty about giving myself an expensive treat every 8-10 years? Why should I feel guilty about having a good, secure job?

There is always the possibility that he just a gigantic tit who is destined to always be miserable. There is no shortage of those types around.

Maybe you will just love working no matter what the job but I would wager you will find the world of employment and particularly low paid dead-end jobs a pretty dull place once the initial elation of getting off the dole has faded away, most people at that end of the scale are just there to pay the bills.

Either way I wish you luck in getting to a place where you will find out for yourself.

    You shouldnt :)
And good on you for having a job and wanting to spend money on what you want :) dont mind people .... just assholes.

And hey, for the record i am on the social welfare. I just cant understand people who begrudge others of what they have.

You shouldnt. It's just jealousy. I know a lot of people who smoke well over 200 euro a month and spend much more than that on boozing every weekend. Yet when the see someone like you buying a new car or bike, they go mental. If you can afford it and that's your interest, then buy the bike and enjoy it. You only live once.

I haven't seen any of that. Usually it's the other way around with employed people having a go at unemployed people. Some long term unemployed people who have never really worked and who have no intention of every working (apart from working the system) do have a massive sense of entitlement though and have themselves convinced that they are hard done by. They are in the minority and best to just ignore them.

When I was on the dole, one day when I was queuing up on signing day, there was some young people handing out fliers. I took one to read and pass the time. The jist of it was that they were unhappy with the way unemployed people are treated. They were outraged that some people had to queue for an hour before being able to sign on and thought the Government should do more to lessen the time spent in the queue. I was gobsmacked that they considered this a serious issue. FFS, you queue once a month. So you have to wait an hour. Big fecking deal. Perhaps the social should roll out the red carpet and serve horderves and champaigne so that people don't feel inconvienced while signing on to claim their free money.

Now if they had been complaining that some of the people who work for social welfare are arseholes who delight in making you feel like a lesser person, then I would have been all for it. Some of them are awful and if you are unemployed, you cannot complain about how you are treated because no one gives a sh!t but to be fair to them, the gob****es who delight in making people feel uncomfortable are in the minority and you'll have that in any industry.

What I do hate, is when you are having a moan about your job and some gob****e says "well at least you are lucky enough to have a job, don't be complaining" That's as irritating as when someone says "smile, it'll never happen" and although violence is never the answer, I think legally we should be allowed to give people who utter such nonsense a good slap :pac:

Tell me about it. The only way I justify remaining in work is that it is financing my future decampment to my own piece of land with enough financial freedom to tell the rest of the world to get stuffed.

It is not even that I dislike my job, it is alright most of the time and is in an area I chose to go into but I do dislike all the time it sucks up that I could be doing something better with.

As for people getting grief off the unemployed for having jobs I suggest hanging out with different people. Obviously if the wasters down the pub know you enough to know your business then you have gotten too friendly with them at some stage. Change your local and avoid the losers in your new choice, they are rarely hard to spot.

wouldn't let it get to me if someone giving me **** cos I had a job or money. Might even find a different pub to drink in. Maybe it was the drink talking. Hope you were not looking down on these lads cos they unemployed cos that could cause ****, not accusing you, just asking. I work, I go to the pub ocassionally (can't afford it too often) and never had any hassle from people unemployed, friends or strangers.

I'm going to stick with the gigantic tit assumption.

I have worked as a kitchen porter, with crappy pay, hours and a horrible boss, but at the end of the day, I was just glad to have it.

I've never been on the dole, but I do know what you mean, the feeling that the money on the first payday was well earned. Twas a good feeling to have, and I do miss it.:o

Agreed. Funny I don't recall luck being involved in me getting jobs. I do remember me (and my family) putting time and money into gaining qualifications that enabled me to get the work I wanted, that and a good deal of CVs and job application letters.

There are plenty out there now that are unlucky to be in the position of wanting to work and facing a terrible job market but that is not the same thing. I do have sympathy for people in that situation and would never have a go at them or begrudge them state benefits unlike the perennial handout merchants who have no intention of paying their way in life whatever the economy is like and will always find some way of staying out of work.

For all the assholes commenting we pay your dole..do you think that the majority off the people want to be on the dole no. like a recent report stated very few of the people on the dole want to be there. So think before you make stupid statements.some people think they can belittle people on the dole without knowing there circumstances.

Would ya ever shut the fcuk up, if you had to work seven days a week in McD's, you'ld get fcuked off after a couple months and be in the exact same situation as your mate, so stop being such a massive arsehole please.

What's with all these post-Celtic tiger rectitude trumpet blowing threads of late?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 387 ✭✭DaveDaRave

It usually seems to be people who do have jobs are angry at people who don't have a job if you go by a lot of threads on boards.

"ive got a mortgage, i work 50 hours a week for 200 euro while these wasters do nothing but drink cans wah wah wah"

They do seem to get upset when I shout 'I can buy and sell people like you'. But I think that's only natural.
