Buying a dish is an aerial needed?

    Hi,

    I know very little about televisions but I'm thinking of buying a dish. Just wondering for setting it up, is the current aerial thingy still required or does the dish replace it?

    What are you trying to achieve?

    Do you want the Sat system (thats a box and a dish btw!) for UK telly? or for UK and Irish telly? or what?

    The cheapest options are -

    saorview with aerial for RTE/TV3/3e/TG4 (does your TV have MPEG4 saorview decoder built in? If not you have to buy a box)

    Free to Air Sat system for non subscription channels such as BBC1/2/3/4, ITV1/2/3/4 Film Four, E4, BBC News, Sky News, Movies 4 Men 1/2, True Movies 1/2

    If you want all the singing and dancing of Irish TV, BBC, Sky Movies, Sky Sports etc in a package then you'll have to shell out on a SKY subscription.

    No, a Dish doesn't replace an aerial. They receive different things.

    Also a Dish needs a "Freeview HD" set-box or PVR to be much use. Hardly any TV sets take a Dish feed directly.

    You only need a Sky subscription if you want Sky, Sky Sports, Discovery etc. These channels here are free without a Sky sub:

    1) All Saorview channels via aerial

    Thanks for your reply and information. Didn't know there were a few options :o:o. I have a TV with the saorview built in and I'm basically looking for the most channels I can get free of charge! I thing its the Free to Air Sat system I want. Do I just have to buy the dish then?

    If your TV has Saorview built in you will need an aerial to receive the Irish stations. http://www.saorview.ie/ explains all.
    If you also want the UK channels, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_free-to-air_channels_at_28%C2%B0E, you will also need a receiver of some sort with a dish.

    If all you want is the channels listed above, then a cheapish Sky dish would do.

    You could DIY or get one of the many local installers to fit a system. Just Google it. Also Google free to air receivers, plenty out there. You could go to Power City as they sell complete DIY kits with dish and receiver and get some info from them.
