    Hi chicke..

I'm pretty sure (although not certain) that they're not opening the hibernia course to business/accounting subjects until 2012 at the earliest!!

You'd probably have to check with the teaching council to see what other subjects you would be eligible to teach based on your degree

Check with the Teaching Council, definitely. Better safe than sorry.

I don't think anyone can comment on employability with any sense of confidence, but if teaching is what you have a passion for I'd say go for it. But it's not a thing I'd recommend if you're doing it soley for employability

    Hey...

Yeah I got offered a place about 3weeks ago.. My subjects are English and History.. How about you? :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33 ldoll

I'm English and History too :)

Went in to the college yesterday and they seemed surprised that I knew when induction was because they hadn't a clue. 'd say we'll hear of times soon in the next week or so. They're still doing interviews! I wonder what the intake is like!

Idoll - I heard the intake was only 100 people, I don't know how many went for it.. I didn't think they'd still be doing interviews... See you on the 15th :)

Let's steer clear of the txtspk thanks.
Good luck to you all in your placements.

Do you think some teachers will be hostile towards the Hibernia programme? Just reading some posts on Educationposts.ie. It's not pretty to say the least!

I have my interview on Thursday evening! I don't know what to expect! My subjects will be Biology and chemistry, any tips?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33 ldoll

Maybe they will be but I think they're all hostile to any more teachers getting qualified (not just through Hibernia) because it causes more competition for jobs.

At the same time I don't think it makes sense to just stop training people, I mean teaching is a worldwide profession so if you can't find work and conditions allow, travelling is always an option. :)

The panel is fair and ask educated questions. Once you know the syllabi for JC and LC, and have some idea of classroom management it will go well I think.

Also be prepared for questions on your feelings on continuous assessment and using computers in class.

My subjects are English and history, but I don't imagine the interview procedure differs too much :):)

Yep starting on the 15th:) too! I knew the principal of the school very well, plus it was my old school so no was no hassel. But I had rang loads and loads of schools and got nothing. No one was helpful at all! Say your old school is the best bet. Would that be handy for you? Don't like the way Hibernia are recommending we do TP in at least 2 different schools! Its ridiculous to say that, basing it on the primary hdip when all other colleges do it in the same school. They can sod off I ain't going through all the stress of getting another TP each time!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33 ldoll

Said the same to me. No thanks! I understand that's it's good to get a varied experience but we'll get that in out careers, especially seeing as how there's no full time positions really! In fairness they do just 'recommend' it :)

Won't be long now until we're stuck into the course ;)

    Hi LMCD545,
Did you hear back from Hibernia since your interview?

Everyone set for tomorrow?? A couple of friends and I are travelling from Limerick and it's a 6 am start!! Looking forward to getting started though!

Had the interview last night, accepted today, off to maynooth inj the morning, really looking forward to it. Since I was late applying and getting the offer, i feel like I will be under pressure to pay by the 21st, the following week would suit me alot better, are they strict with this or does anyone have a similar experience:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33 ldoll

Glad to get the induction day over with! It has begun... :):)

As for the fees, you're able to claim 20% back with your tax (if you (or if someone is/say they) are in employment). That's the reason the deadline is strict I think.

Other than that they might let you prospone for a week or two. I can't imagine why not.

Having started this course last week, and only 190 people undetaking it, did they actually say no to anyone or was everyone interviewed offered the course, I expected alot more to be doing it so just wondering:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33 ldoll

Their standards weren't that high, but from what I've been told, people were turned away - but only if they were very clearly not up for the task of teaching :)

There are no jobs in teaching so that's why there proberly wasn't many on the course. I trained with Hibernia 3 years ago for the H.Dip in Primary Education & am still unemployed along with most of my class.
