What about Pat O'Callaghan? He got his first gold medal way back in 1928 and another in the following olympics. He's certainly a hero in my eyes. He was our family doctor many years ago in Clonmel until he retired. I'd love to know what happened his medals.

I know lots of pics of Senna posted already but his career was filled with great moments such as this one when Senna won in his home country of Brazil for the first time which didn't come till 1991:
    sennabrazil1991_595.jpg
The Brazilian qualified his McLaren on pole, and spent the race holding off the faster Williams cars of Nigel Mansell and Riccardo Patrese. Mansell's challenge was ended by a broken gearbox with 10 laps to go.

Unknown to anyone outside McLaren, Senna had been in gearbox trouble for some time, having lost fourth gear. Mansell's retirement left Patrese in second place, and catching Senna rapidly.

With two laps to go, Senna also lost fifth and third gears, meaning he had to take most of the corners in sixth, nearly stalling several times. Complicating his task further, it was starting to rain, and as the weather deteriorated Senna began gesturing to stewards to stop the race.

It ran full distance, though, and, utterly exhausted and in extreme pain, Senna had to be lifted out of his car.
After Senna won the GP, he fainted because of dehydration. He was trasported to the podium by the medical car.

    Crash_Le_Mans_1955_Big.jpg

The 1955 running of the 24 Heures Du Mans, The worst accident in motorsports historytakes place with the death toll at 83 spectators, 1 driver, and 120 injuries.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1955_Le_Mans_disaster

    In contrast:
    crash.jpg

The No:3 Audi R18 of Alan McNish (Scotland) flies into safety barriers after a clipping another racer at high speed, The car hit the tire wall whilst airborne, barrel rolled several times and came to rest upside down on partly on the safety barrier,
Despite the apparent severity of the crash, the marshals overturned the car and McNish was able to get out of the car uninjured but somewhat shaken, and no spectators, marshals or photographers were seriously injured,
It was one of two major accidents for the Audi teams new R18, where both cars were completely destroyed yet the drivers walked away uninjured.
It was Audi's first year with a new closed cockpit design, had the accident happened in any of their previous open cockpit cars, the outcome would almost certainly been severe injury or even death to the drivers.
