Most Irish haven't travelled the world, or lived in Australia. Most of the world's major cities, probably all, have some obvious drug users, so it's not news really, is it?

Milk was on RTÉ last week or the week before

Wasn't a great advertisement for the city or the people

Actually, I stayed in San Fran as a student a while back. I was told the reason there are so many is because of the mild climate in the city (never gets too warm because of the fog and also never gets too cold), and apparently during the Olympic games in Atlanta, the homeless there were bused out of the city, many to San Fran. One other theory, many of the homeless would be of the generation that enjoyed the summer of love there, and possibly never really got help with their addictions.

it was bad brother, very bad , you know somethings wrong when you see a pair of legs in a bin or a fella crawling across the street on his hands and knees with no shirt on , every corner a scumbag till you hit union square thats were the big money is, a real contrast of rich and poor but never so blatant

Ive been in San Fran, the people over there seem to be more friendly towards the homeless. I stayed in lower Haight. People left shoes, clothes and matresses out on the sidewalk for them. I wouldnt call them scumbags. There are scumbags in all walks of life

Yes, they definitely aren't scumbags, many of them are Vietnam veterans who are still coping with mental issues since. Lower Haight would be an area I would associate with shelters and things, so I can imagine you have seen a good few in that area! Went back to San Fran this summer, accidentally wound up on the Tenderloin during feeding time in the shelters, not an experience I would like to relive anytime soon!;)

It is noticeable in SFO that the feel and atmosphere downtown can alter fairly radically from street to street and block to block.

Perhaps the long standing liberal ethos of the city council and wider populace precludes them from an Giuliani-style clean up.

just stay the hell out of the Tenderloin area

You have to laugh at the blatant double standards in after hours if this story was about Dublin you would be all over it like a rash calling for sterilization ect.

I got so much crack in my bones,
That my friends just call me Crack,
When I'm walking down the street they go "Hey Crack",
I go "Hey Steve, what's goin' on?"
I got it in my heart,
And I got it in my socks,
When my woman and me are fighting,
I just give her a couple of rocks!

    Everybody loves crack!
    (I love crack!)
You on crack! You on crack!
    Everybody's on crack!
    Everybody - it's a matter of fact,
    Your momma's on crack,
    Your daddy's on crack,
That's why I love that crikity crikity crack crack crikity, bom-bom-ba-dickity love that crikity crack! Watch my back while i do my crack …… I'm comin back like Lojack for the crack!

California in general has a lot of homeless people, the weather means they never have to worry about freezing to death in the winter, hence a lot of homeless people end up there.

Ive been to San Fran, yes there is a lot but the vast majority are harmless. it looks bad for tourists etc but i never felt unsafe even when there were loads of them.
