It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this out, but there's still no BBC. Real pity because for the first time, I actully believed that this theme might be based on fact and real.

It is not due until tonight at 20.00! I for one won't be holding my breath. I will just go on watching BBC from satellite like I have done for the past 18 months with a BBC from rick-wain@nightmail.com Not just rumours but fact from this guy. PS watch this space, tomorrow the "people in the know" will give us another date for BBC in Ireland. What a load of crap!! It is not coming at all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

• Registered Users Posts: 166,026 ✭✭✭✭LegacyUser

Yeah, tis a pity that BBC didn't come on. I rang Sky Customer Services regarding the issue and was told that BBC were CONSIDERING the issue and haven't finalised any plans. Hmmm. There seems to be a different story from Sky every day. The holdup is the fact that we do not pay BBC licence fees. I wish sky could stick to one story and either tell us YES or NO. As for Apr1, who knows?

Just a question about the copyright situation. I understand there is an issue for the BBC/C4 etc, but I don't understand why Sky is any different to Chorus/NTL. In the case of those companies, which have a much much larger market share than Sky, I assume there is some kind of copyright fee payment.

One poster suggested an indication that the BBC could never appear on Sky was that RTE was paying for the rights to Eastenders and if the BBC appeared on Sky RTE could sue... However the majority(??) of homes in Ireland already have all the UK terrestrials? Somebody else said that RTE would suffer huge advertising losses... Why? How many homes are there who only get the Irish channels?

So... surely the question is not simply a copyrights issue, since other companies have already dealy with that. Why is Sky different?

John.

i cant see any reason why sky cannot broadcast BBC apart from licencing. It should have nowt to do with RTÉ. The UK terrs will be available on the irish Digital Terrestrial Television service when it launches (prob 2002). I just wish Sky/BBC would stick their channels on our EPG and stop giving us contradictory stories everytime u speak to them!! >:

Like Gopher, e-mailed this rick somebody, and again like Gopher it came bouncing back.
Is this Rick Wain for real??? or a you making a joke.
Yes disapointing that BBC is not on. I too contacted Sky today and they said "Not in the near Future".....

Just had this reply from the BBC (e-mail address given earlier in the forum) :

Dear Mr O'Brien

Thank you for your email.

BBC is in talks with Sky to put BBC1 and BBC2 onto DSat (digital satellite
TV) in Eire very shortly. These services are nor free-to -view, but will
be subject to a subscription with Sky. I am sorry, but I am unable to give
you more specific information at present.

I hope that this is helpful. Thank you again for contacting us.

Best regards

I am after getting a reply from BBC too and guess what? The email that was sent to me is exact same as yours word-for-word. I assume it's an automated response or something. I asked lots of other q's like 'is bbc going to be on a sky package or Premium channels (like £6 for Film4, MUTV, etc). I would rather not pay more than the £36 i'm paying now

I am wondering that since Tony posted the "Rumour" at the beginning of this thread, has he had any discussions with his contact at Sky??
If so a "Quote" would be appreciated.
Thanks,

8.10 and still nothing on the EPG and "This programme is not available" on manually tuned BBC1 (NI), 2, Choice, Knowledge and News 24.

Where did the information that they would be available from 8 o'clock come from ?

Looks like we'll have to wait a bit longer for BBC in digital glory.

when is the announcement from Sky due. someone said it would be this week. is this fact or another dreamt up rumour

• Registered Users Posts: 166,026 ✭✭✭✭LegacyUser

When our company rang Sky last week, they said that they would make an announcement regarding the issue (this week), but the way Sky keep contradicting themselves, who knows! Electroplus told us (and not only us) that BBC would be ON this week. Hmmm. Do they know something Sky don't? All i know is from what BBC emailed me which is the same email as above from another user. I emailed c4 and c5 but no response. it wouldnt kill them just to reply with Yes or No. <img src="../www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/mad.gif" ALT=" OLDREF="http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/mad.gif">:">

Hi Guys, just to clarify the mon schedule quoted to me was for technical test purposes and was subject to change. The actual launch date has not yet been confirmed, mid april is the ball park but this is also subject to change. If anybody wants to search all the transponders on 2d this might throw up something but again I repeat there are no definite dates/times as yet.

Regards Tony

Just to throw an extra spanner in the works, there should be a system update today (for the new Music Choice Interactive on Channels 480 and 481). I wonder if this update might in any way also switch on the testing of the BBC's.

And, yes, I know that you don't need an update to activate channels.
