Have I mis-understod you here? Are you saying that rugby Dev Officers are coaching teams in other sports while being paid to coach rugby?
1 of the development officers has been involved with an inter county hurling team as a strength and conditioning coach. That role would take up a considerable amount of time, even if a lot of work will be done in summer. Surely he shouldnt be allowed as their job is to develop rugby not work with other sports whilest not putting 100% of their effort into developing rugby in schools, clubs etc

Mike Sherry has been called out to NZ in case Best doesn't recover. He cant formally take up a position with the Irish camp until they decide on Best as Best cant rejoin camp again once released.

Great news for Sherry but Munster are hard hit now for hookers, that's 3 from Munster that have travelled to the W/C.

A great opportunity for anyone down the pecking order though. And there's a reasonable chance that only 2 of the 3 sent to the WC will be returning to Munster. :(

    C'est la vie.
Priorities aside (ie. a Rugby World Cup v RaboDirect Pro12), the learning experience for Sherry and Varley from being involved will be huge.

Not knocking it at all, Varley will obviously gain from it because he's actually joined up with the team and has been training with them, Sherry on the other hand may not even get to join the squad. Still hoping that we dont lose Best but I'd lve to see Sherry get training time with the W/C sqaud as they're on fire at the moment.

Afaik, Sherry was training with the squad before they left anyhow, it won't be completely new to him.

Munster A Schools win interpro championship
MUNSTER A Schools completed a brilliant interprovincial campaign by beating their Leinster counterparts in Dublin today.

Munster led 6-8 at the break, Jaco Oosterhausen kicking a penalty and Stephen Scannel scoring a try for the visitors.

Munster showed great character in the second half with Leinster's try coming in the final minutes. Stephen Scannel scored his second try 28 minutes into that second period while a superb intercept try by man of the match, openside backrow Richard Kingston, sealed the game for the reds. Tipp Delaney converted both tries and the celebrations were all in the visitors' dressingroom after this terrific performance.

No word of the final score but the heading says they won.

Munster's Super 15 medal winner Will Chambers arrived in Cork this afternoon to begin his stint with the province.

Chambers (23), who has been signed on a short term contract, will first undergo the normal medical and fitness examinations before joining up with his colleagues in Limerick, where he will be based, on Monday.

He will not be a total stranger to the coaching staff nor some of the players having met up with them a fortnight ago. "Yeh, I was fortunate enough to go to Edinburgh and meet a few of the boys there before their game. Unfortunately they didn't get the result but they were very welcoming to me, made me feel comfortable and now I'm looking forward to getting to know them all a bit better and see how we all go," he said shortly after arriving from London at Cork International Airport.

"Obviously I'm pretty excited to be over here." he continued. "It's a very prestigious club and when I was presented with the opportunity to come over I took it with both hands."

"Most footy players dream of playing with a club like Munster, pulling on that red jersey and it's something I'm looking forward to."

"To actually be over here now and getting in and mingling and meeting all the boys is something I'm very excited about."

Nor is he totally unaware of what he's facing into. "Ah I did a bit of research and spoke to a few people and they made me aware it's one of the most prestigious clubs in the world. How the whole place is set up. How crazy the fans are!"

"Oh I know they love their footy over here, I know the fans get right behind them and I know it's something I'm looking forward to."

Con hold firm to sink old rivals Dolphin
    Dolphin 10 Cork Constitution 17
    By Barry Coughlan
    Saturday, October 15, 2011
DOLPHIN suffered a galling defeat at the hands of arch city rivals Cork Constitution in the Ulster Bank League at Musgrave Park last night.
A minute from the end, Dolphin almost smashed their way through for what would have been a deserved draw, only for impressive centre Harry Fleming to drop the ball, with the line at his mercy.

It just about summed up Dolphin’s night; the only consolation being a losing bonus point and a financial boost from a big home gate of 2,000, on a night when Tomás O’Leary made a successful return from injury.

Right to the end, Dolphin played the better rugby but also made too many mistakes to give them the result their efforts deserved.

With limited possession and territory, Constitution were ruthless and must get credit for that.

Last year’s beaten finalists had a dream start with a try inside five minutes. The utilisation of their backs out wide on the left paid dividends, even though Simon Zebo was stopped short of the target. Constitution won the ruck and Dara Lyons sent Brian Hayes in under the sticks, with the out-half converting for a seven-point advantage.

Dolphin were to rue a missed chance in the 12th minute. The home side were awarded a penalty in front of the posts and Keeshan went to run it but his pass to winger Kevin Brophy was forward and the chance was lost.

Dolphin’s big, abrasive, pack dictated the pace and it allowed international O’Leary a comfortable if uneventful return after injury.

Zebo’s midfield break almost unlocked the home defence late in the half and it indicated the potential behind a struggling Con pack. It got better for them when Scott Deasy’s injury-time angled kick found Niall O’Driscoll in space and the centre won a high ball to score in the corner for what was surely an undeserved 12-0 scoreline.

Amazingly, 10 minutes into the second half, Dolphin were back in the game. Keeshan kicked a penalty, then provided the opportunity for Willie Devane to race in for a try, which the out-half converted to cut the deficit to two.

With O’Leary and Con number eight Joe McSwiney both sin-binned for technical offences, the battle continued to enthral the fans.

Even against the wind, Dolphin camped in the Con half, but the nearest they came in that third quarter was a penalty chance missed by Keeshan in windy conditions.
Then Constitution grabbed the all-important score, with O’Driscoll getting his second of the night, and ultimately it mattered little Gerry Hurley missed the conversion.

That advantage was enough to keep the Temple Hill side in control, despite Dolphin’s frantic late efforts.

    DOLPHIN: N Whalley, C Bohane, H Fleming, W Devane, K Brophy, B Keeshan, T O’Leary, J Cronin, A O’Driscoll, C Condon, C Rowe, D O’Mahony, D O’Callaghan (captain), R Allen, J Quill.

    Replacements: G Duffy for Cronin (33), R O’Herlihy for Allen (46), E O’Shaughnessy for Brophy (55), J O’Flynn for O’Leary (60).

    CORK CONSTITUTION: R Clune, C Quinn, N O’Driscoll, S Deasy, S Zebo, D Lyons, G Hurley (captain), M Gateley, A Cudmore, J Ryan, B Hayes, P Donnellan, I Nagle, J McSwiney, B Cuttriss.

Replacements: J Holland for Lyons (52).

    Referee: D Phillips (IRFU).

Nagle at 6, could be inspired, could be the sign of jack of all trades, master of none ryanism. It's also interesting/depressing that Deasy is considered a better bet at 12 than he is at 10/15, positions he usually plays for Munster.

I see Castres have moved their home tie with Munster to Toulouse. That's a serious boost for Munster. Castres are seriously good at home and it also suggests that their main focus is on the T14 (which was to be expected). Moving the game 80km away will heavily dilute any potential home advantage. Castres thumped a strong Toulouse squad 24-3 at home last night and are now top of the table. The move will be to cash in on Munster's big travelling support. I would expect them to play Northampton and Llanelli in Castres where they'll be far stronger.

    Update on BJ's citing
BJ Botha will travel to Scotland to appear before a Discipllinary Committee in the morning arising out of an incident in the RaboDiret PRO12 game against Ospreys. Share
The Disciplinary Committee will comprise of Paul Minto (Scotland) Chairman, Marco Cordelli (Italy) and Rob Flockhart (Scotland).

The hearing will take place tomorrow Tuesday 18 October 2011, commencing at 9:30 am, and will be held at Murrayfield Stadium.

Botha is alleged to have struck Richard Hibbard with his head in the game played at Thomond Park Stadium.

He made a serious impact (not with the head!) when he came on. It's important he's available for Leinster at the Aviva and the Heineken Cup.

On another note, Vasily Artemyev scored a hat trick on his Northampton debut against Saracens at the weekend. Perhaps we'll see him at Thomond in a few weeks.

Good to see the league finally has sorted out the citing process, the travel is a bit of a pain in the hole I suppose but having the IRFU disciplining Irish players, WRU the Welsh players etc was a joke.

Good point. Mind you I'd have highly fancies Leinster's front row against Munster's before the League final last year, but the Munster lads were excellent.

Has Hayes retired now? I know his contract was only to the end of the world cup but I'd hope he would have one final match in Thomond where he could be subbed to get the acclaim he deserves.

That young lad McGahan got on his Holidays from the must sell quick bargain basket beside the checkout at Queensland Reds took the last place in the squad. No more signings this year.

Good to see that they've gone for an independent citing panel but did they really have to wait 10days for the actual hearing.

Munster poised to give Hayes new contract

MUNSTER ARE poised to offer John Hayes a new contract. The 105-times capped tighthead prop was passed over for Ireland’s World Cup squad, but kept under contract until the tournament concluded in case he was required as an injury replacement.

Hayes’ IRFU deal ends on Sunday but circumstances in Munster mean, despite turning 38 next month, his retirement has been postponed.

Darragh Hurley is struggling with an Achilles tendon problem while Kiwi Peter Borlase has knee and back injuries.

I suppose with the two weeks off they're in no hurry.

Any ban, I assume, would be given under the same circumstances that we've seen bans given to the likes of Armitage last season and Quinlan in 2009 i.e. it only applies to playing weeks. If there's a break in the calendar, the weeks carry over. Quinlan was banned in early May 2009 for 12 weeks and missed the start of the Pro12 season. Armitage was injured last season and the RFU delayed his ban until he returned from injury. Although, we can take nothing for granted with the Pro12.

Hayes getting a contract is pretty much a disaster, we need to try out new guys, even if they struggle massively at the beginning. I'm not sure Archer will make it but Hayes has been in decline for ages now. We should ride out the effects of Botha's (probable) ban.

Afaik, Chambers is only a short term contract thing, not necessarily sure it'd block us bringing someone in on a long term one. We could probably get away with saying Chambers was injury cover for Jones.

I think if Botha gets banned for a significant period, we should keep Hayes on.

Take the Heineken Cup games for example, would you want a academy/sub academy player coming on for an early injury and have to face Tonga'uiha or Mujati for 70 minutes? Also Archer hasn't looked great this season, looked how the scrum situation turned against Ospreys when Botha replaced him.

I think we should try youngsters against Aironi, who have good scrummagers themselves. Cotter or John Ryan at tighthead maybe?

I suppose with the two weeks off they're in no hurry.

Tipuric, was also cited and his hearing is on today as well and Ospreys had a game last week-end so yes a 10 delay is an issue, but aside from games there is also the issue of having the citing hanging over the player for such a long time.
