The term 'Scumbag' was originally conceived to describe a used condom.

Are you sure ? Was it not to describe the result of when a condom SHOULD HAVE been used, but wasn't ?

For me a scumbag is a person who

    1. is neither going to or returning from a gym but still wears a tracksuit
    2. refers to Mountjoy prison as "The joy"
    3. Thinks that the Adrian Kennedy is a non biased free and frank exchange of views
    4. Beverage of choice has the words "Dutch" "Gold" or "Bavaria" on the can
    5. Calls someone a Scumbag

Smug condescending middle-class Mammy's boys, who have got everything they have wanted since they were young, have never known hardship, and who look down on people less fortunate as themselves with distain.

Religion has nothing to do with the discussion.

Yes it does.. Does religion not provide a moral code? What is moral behaviour to me is not in the eyes of the catholic church..

doesnt matter where youre from, what clothes you wear etc. Lads from posh areas, in their rugby gear can be just as much a scumbag as the stereotypical guy from a poor area in a tracksuit.

e.g. if you get into fights often enough youre a scumbag, doesnt matter if youre from ballymun or blackrock.

If a guy breaks into your house and steals some of your stuff he's an evil scumbag.

If a guy dips into you wages week-after-week to pay for his failed speculating and or pension rewarded for a failed career then he's a cute hoor.

For arguments sake, maybe there are people who would think that about you?

Listen, I know scum when I see it. They wear sports shoes, they have tight haircuts, at any or one point in their lives someone in their family claimed welfare, they or their fathers have commited a crime against the law. They listen to loud music. They are not members of the gaa nor do they attend mass regularly. They usually come from urban areas. The smoke, they drink offlicence alcohol and have at one point in their lives, spat in public. They are the scum of the filth and nobody, ever deserves a second chance.

    Now you have it.

I can always tell when someone has had no dealings with them. You be amazed how quickly you change your mind when you have to deal with them. Move in to an area with a lot of them. Bring your nice car and stuff and see how your attitude is in a week.

Go into any of the regional forums and they will tell you, every town and city in Ireland has them but they seem to vary from place to place, but the popular consensus among boards is that if you wear a tracksuit and you are not going to the gym then you are a scumbag

    You don't need religion to tell you that;

Accepting a digout from business friends when you're Finance Minister is wrong.

That cheating the social welfare is wrong.

That robbing people at an ATM is wrong.

That threatening to kill your housemate with a kitchen knife is wrong.

Indeed, I was only a week out of hospital after an operation on my lung and got hopped on by 6 of what I would describe as "rugger buggers" for no reason other than being in the same newsagent as them...

I've walked around Ballymun a lot of my life and never once got grief!

In an ideal world but unfortunately many people don't see it that way. People from poorer areas are usually only labelled scumbags. All you have to do is wear a tracksuit and come from a poorer area of North Dublin and you're automatically labelled.

I'm considered a scumbag by virtue of the fact I'm from North Dublin by a scary amount of people in this country, never mind that I'm from a "nice" area.

It's a word I use to spot snobs. If someone uses it freely, I've no time for them.

4 words - "tucks tracksuit in socks"

What do tracksuits have do to with going to the gym? I go jogging while wearing a tracksuit, does that make me a scumbag?

And why does a scumbag have to wear a tracksuit? Bertie wore a suit and I would regard him a bigger scumbag then the average teenager from a poor area.

For me a scumbag is someone with no morals. Whilst its not 100% accurate to base whether or not someone is a scumbag based on their clothes and where they come from, the sad truth is that it is all too often a fairly reliable indicator.

Not in all cases though, I wear tracksuits, drive a modified car and live in the North cork city. I have a fairly local accent and curse a lot. It doesn't mean Im a complete moron, nor does it mean Im likely to rob a post office any time soon.

So your normal, as is 99% of people, I am from a tough part of dublin, I wear tracksuits, I have a thick Dub accent, but I do my utmost not to bother people and I have a level of social responsibility.

In my old estate the corpo built a new play ground for the kid, it modern and probably cost a fair bit, it only up about 3 months and it is already dabbed with their moronic and ugly graffiti and vandalised in places.

So why do they do this, why can't they respect it for their community, because they don't give a bollox. They just lift the level of tension in anywhere they are, cntus.

No Bertie is by my criteria not a scumbag. If I was to call him what he is I would earn a lifetime ban from Boards and it would probably break D'internet

From an old wikipedia article on Skangers, I cant believe this article was taken down, its so incredibly apt:
    • The wearing of baseball caps at improbably large angles.
    • The wearing of white, branded trainers, with the laces behind the tongue of the shoe. Often, tracksuit bottoms tucked into white branded socks are worn.
    • The wearing of very short haircuts (sometimes with a short fringe or quiff at the front) in males.
    • Older male scangers can be seen sporting a small furry moustache made famous by Irish boxer Barry McGuigan.
    • Very fond of the bling culture so the wearing of prominent jewellery: facial jewellery, large rings (mostly sovereigns) and thick chains (worn around the neck or wrist) is compulsory. Jewellery is often made of gold, or has the appearance of gold. Large neckchains are commonly worn over clothing; typically on the outside of a t-shirt.
    • Often smoking, prefered brands being John Player Blue for men and Silk Cut Purple for women.
    • A particular gait, often likened to the walk and bobbing head of a pigeon.
    • A stance similar to that of someone with a tennis ball underneath each armpit .
    • When walking solo down the street, will keep his eyes firmly on the footpath.
    • Habitual public spitting.
    • When using the bus, will sit upstairs at the back and smoke.
    • Quite often malnourished
    • Males usually go topless in sunshine, but carry jacket in hand just in case.

The stereotypical accent is a particularly noticeable characteristic in this grouping. In Dublin, the accent resembles the typical inner-city accent, but with some slight differences:
    • The speaker speaks in a rather high-pitched nasal tone, and some sounds are consequently slurred to some extent.
    • There is apparent difficulty in pronouncing vowel sounds such as the short 'o' sound of 'oh', often enunciated as 'ah', as in 'story' ('starry'). The flat 'u' sound of 'uh' also causes some difficulty: this is variously rendered as either a long and emphasised 'uuh' sound, or 'eh', as in
    • A corrupted form of Dublin slang is used, which is so modified it is sometimes quite unintelligible to other Dubliners. A common greeting used by so-called scangers is pronounced 'starry buud?', a corruption of the Dublin phrase 'what's the story, bud?', meaning, 'how are you, my friend?'. Generally, diphtongs are not pronounced, rather separated into two different sounds.
    • Syllables are often added to single-syllable words. For example "I bunked off skoo-well" rather than "I took some unauthorised absence from school"
    • 'Wha'?', a contraction of 'what?', is used frequently at the end of a statment to pose the question 'do you understand what I am saying?'. For example, 'Deadly buzz that is, wha'?'. 'Wha' is also used in conversation with non-scangers to force the non-scanger to repeat their question, this allows the scanger time to comprehend 'non scanger' speech. The overuse of the term 'wha' has developed into scangers often uttering a 'Swha' noise at all times.
    • Some scangers, along with some Dubliners not identifiable with the scanger stereotype, use a curious version of the possessive adjective form of 'you' (plural), normally enunciated as 'your', which is pronounced in this case as 'yezzer'. A possible explanation for this is that it is a combination of 'yez', a corruption of Dublin slang 'yous' (the second-person plural pronoun), and 'your'.
    • 'Anyway' has mutated into 'Inanyways' as a preferred sentence opener or to notify a change of subject, for example: 'Inanyways, have yez any blow?'
    • The generalisation of the ending of peoples names with a vowel, most commonly "O,A,I & E". Example, Thomas - "Tommo", Anthony - "Anto", Declan - "Decco". Girls names for example, Patricia - Patricieaaa - extenuating the "a" at the end as well as "ic" into an "ieeeeeeeee". The elocution has developed to somewhat like talking while trying to keep words inside the mouth. This is achieved in a sense like making an "O" of the mouth as if to blow out a candle before talking. Vowels are thus easier to include in normal speech patterns.
    • Swearing and general vulgarity is usually common during speech.

A scumbag is one who judges others by what clothes they decide to cover their bodies with.

The common scumbag will say -

"A scumbag is one who wears tracksuit bottoms "

"One must only wear tracksuit bottoms in a gym"

"He who wears football jerseys, is a scumbag"

A scumbag is somebody who generalises large portions of society based on what they look like and what they wear.

The scumbag has a small mind. In general, the common scumbag is judgmental. A scumbag judges other human beings on the clothing that they choose to cover their bodies with.
