The theft of a relic from the cross on which Jesus Christ is believed to have been crucified is being investigated in Co Tipperary.

Gardaí are investigating the theft of a relic from the cross on which Jesus Christ is believed to have been crucified.
The relic was taken yesterday evening from Holy Cross Abbey near Thurles by thieves who cut through a steel door of a display cabinet.
Parish priest of Holy Cross Fr Tom Breen told RTÉ News the relic had been in the Abbey for almost 900 years.
Gardaí said two suspects, who had their faces covered, entered the Abbey at 5pm. They had a portable angle grinder, a hammer and a screwdriver with them.
The two left the area a few minutes later in a red 2006 Offaly or Limerick Volkswagen Touareg.
The car was found at Yellow Lough, Thurles. It had been set on fire. A dark-coloured car was seen leaving the area at high speed.
Anyone with information has been asked to contact Thurles Garda Station on 0504-25100.

Fecking Christians are getting bolder and bolder.
    Soon they'll be stealing churches.

Surely, if there is a God they will be punished accordingly, hopefully by an anal invasion of locusts.

I'd say it was the priests. Now they will release a story saying it was Jesus rising again, coming back to reclaim what's rightfully his.

Ahh holy relics from the true church, Saint Domiinic had 28 fingers and thumbs, St John the Baptist had 3 heads, but most amazingly miraculous pope sylvester had 2 bodies. There are enough parts of the true cross to make a ship.

I'd say it could be quite hard to get this back.

you can't just sell it to anyone, so you'd have to assume that there was a buyer BEFORE it was stolen and the 2 ones that stole it were approached the buyer.

I'd imagine if this had happened 50 or 100 years ago it'd have been a national scandal. As it is probably the majority of people don't care or think it serious. It's about the equivalent of someone stealing an original R2D2 action figure from George Lucas's basement.

Luckily for the Church, I've a replacement relic that I can let go for the right price.

And one for everybody in the audience!

A relic? Off the cross? Brought to Thurles? Even if it did exist why the hell would it be in Thurles of all places?

    Not Thurles

    Holycross Abbey

Some beautiful buildings out there, worth a visit

I'm sure we were taught in school that there is 'relic of the true cross' set into every Catholic church altar. It must have been a huge cross.

ETA: I misremembered... it's a relic, normally a bone fragment, from a saint in every altar.

are they sure it was stolen and not shoved up the arse of a visiting bishop, who was only there to raise it from a class 3 relic to a class 2 relic, by some drunken priest who was trained for the day to be nice?

Does that mean they'll have to rename the place to just "Abbey" - since the Holycross is now gone

Welcome to a greed stained Ireland, where relics which have survived the ages of invasion and suppression, are being ransacked for modern avarice.

Tis only a Class-I relic sure.

    Huh?

Surely if there was a Jesus and he was the son of God as in the RC God and that is the cross he was crucified on surely it would have healing powers etc.

First they came for the socialists...

That would be an ecumenical matter

According to John Calvin if all the fragments of the cross were gathered together it would amount to a ship load.
