Thirteen people involved in a row at a pre-natal clinic in a Longford hospital - when CS Gas and pepper spray were used on pregnant mothers - have been convicted during a sitting of the Circuit Court in Longford.

The incident happened in September 2009 after a feud involving members of the Nevin and the Stokes family led to violent scenes at 9am in a clinic at St Joseph's Hospital in Longford.

Weaponry used in the incident included a poker, a pen knife, a scissors, and a canister of CS Gas.

At Longford Circuit Court this morning Judge Rory McCabe handed down suspended sentences to 10 of those involved in what he described as a shameful disturbance.

He also indicated he would hand down custodial sentences to three people who he said bore much of the blame for the violence on the day, but has now adjourned sentencing so that he can consider probation officers reports on the three people involved.

The court was told that there has been no recurrence of the violence between members of the Gavin, Duignan and Nevin families since September 2009.

A violent riot in a hospital with a cannister of CS gas set off and it looks like there might be no jail time for anyone. Is anyone else disgusted?

Two years to get a case to court?

I've seen our district court setup on a Sunday morning after trouble in town the night before

I get that the circuit court is for serious cases but two years?

That remains to be seen. If there is a custodial sentnece given to the other three I would bet my wages they will be very minor with a large part suspended.

This is Longford. Half the town is lined up in circuit court. Hence why it took so long. God I hate Longford.

Even though Im from the county (Ballinalee to be exact), I despise the town with a passion.

Lol while reading this thread on my phone, waiting for a train, three travellers carrying cans came up to me, asked for money, hash and fags. When I declined, they cast aspersions on my parentage and sexuality, then got on a train without paying.

Ah Longford, was only there once

Waking down the main street and a young lad decided to spit on my shoe. :mad:
He was sitting on a railing by a narrow footpath with his buddies

Stopped into one pub for a coke and it was the darkest pub I've ever been in. So cold and dark and they sell cans behind the counter. I forget the name, it was near the train station

On the plus side, I needed a jump start for the car and one gentleman helped me out in the train station car park, thank you Sir

Also from the county (Killoe), since moved to Athlone. Our business was literally driven out of town because of 'those people'

The difference is that when usually you hear stories of huge streetfights, pubs being besieged, or massive public order disturbances, there's usually (a tiny minority of) travellers involved.

It's possible of course that these events are routine amongst the vastly larger settled community, and the media aren't reporting it at all for some reason...:rolleyes:

The traveller stuff usually only makes the local press and only the major incidents get to the national news such as the incidents in Mullingar, Tipperary and Navan.
