A Soprano On Her Head- Shall We Dance - Abstract

Eloise Ristad is move by the paintings of Chaim Nahor. The artist recognizes that the painting move her because of the motion he went through in creating the art. These are the common experiences a human body will relate to physically. A dance that both the artist and the viewer share. A creation while mechanically correct can loss its connection to the rhythms and motions of the human body experience. Such a work will not move the audience.

Eloise goes on to apply this experience to teaching musicians to create music that moves people. To move people with music, the musician must first be moved by the music.

In the first case, she asks Kate, a 7th grader to press her palms against the instructor's palms and feel the exchange of slow tension and energy which is present in the opening phrase of a Mozert piece. She describes the experience of the motion as if one were exploring a grotto. Her method is doubted by another artist Larry Grahmn, who latter discovers that he also moves his hands when describing the same Mozart music.

Movement guilds interpretation of music. Understanding the lyrics is only part of understanding the music. Music evoking movement is a common human body experience. The fetus responds to music. Children respond to music with their whole bodies. Calls for children to be still and behave when they dance suppress our natural response to music. It separates the mind and body.

Eloise wants to help us reconnect.

Eloise tells the reader to listen to sweeping music. She instructs the reader to lie on the floor and let the music carry the motion of the bodies responses and to feel the rhythms and the climaxes physically.

Watching another dance to ones own performance assists in understanding the music body connection.

Eloise tells us to tap our fingers to the music. She tells to dance with others and to respond with movement exchange in improvisation.

Rhythms are natural. The heart beats and the lungs breath. For those that can't find their natural rhythm, Eloise suggests crawling in opposition (right arm forward, left knee forward) to reconnect with the natural rhythms of the body.

Eloise tells us to practice connecting the body to music by any means necessary, to just dance, and to explore diverse music. The music must move the musician before it moves the audience.

The way that you are shaking it is somewhat reminiscent of someone trying to ensure prompt and even development of a picture taken on the 'instant' photo paper used in cameras developed by the renowned photography company, Polaroid.
