Can anyone recommend a good HD freesat receiver that offers recording, pause/rewind basically the same features of a UPC/SKY box.

    Humax Foxsat HDR.

Had UPC and this works just as well.

Not the same choice as SKY HD.

Thats the one I was thinking, but was trying to spend a bit less if possible.

You get what you pay for. I was in the same boat but after reading reviews etc, took bull by the horns and went for the Foxsat. Not sorry.
Got it off e-bay for about €230 delivered. Only 230gig version but I reckon if I have that much recorded to watch, I need a life.....

Simple to set up, has not let me down and easy to record programmes.

The Samsung SMT-S7800 was not readily available when I was looking and I MIGHT have gone for that. It appeared that there was a lot of teething problems with it, possibly cured now, and I felt that the Fooxsat was well tried and problems known and sorted, so bought it. Samsung is a bit cheaper. Likewise the Sagem and others.

But, as I said else where, beware...........

This sat thing is addictive, and I am now looking at a 1.1m dish for extra channels.

    Cheers

    TC
