Mice mean you don't have rats. That's how I look at it.

But in fairness your landlord has to do something about it quick, its in the lease agreement that the property should be fit for living in and it obviously not seeing as it has a vermin infestation. You are well within your rights to not pay your rent until the landlord sorts it out. And if the landlord does not like that then give Threshold or the PRTB a shout.

To be honest, at this stage I just want to get out. I have been telling them each time there was a sighting, etc, over past few months, they put down traps but they are still getting in some place.
I'm not happy or comfortable here any more and don't even want to think what it will be like when the weather gets really cold.

    Borrow a cat.

Tried that, she just curled up and fell asleep in the couch!

OP, I feel your distress, I'm terrified of mice too :( I purchased a couple of plug in pest repellents about ten years ago and so far I've never had mice in my home.

Have them, all over the house. Does nothing to keep the mice away!

Get 2 cats and you will have no problems.

Did alarm bells not ring in you're head when you seen mouse traps before you moved in?

Yeah, kinda, but I really liked the house, so decided to pretend they weren't there!
Obviously that worked really well for me.
I've got lots of viewings lined up for tomorrow to see new places. Until I find someplace sleeping in my car is looking like an option.

Yes, and we all have a place in the universe, but that place for mice is not any where near me.

Maybe you've got deaf mice, instead of blind mice?

Would much prefer if they were dead mice.

Just tell the landlord you're not paying any more rent until they sort this problem out.
They'll not be long doing something about it then.

Also, try another cat, preferably not another fat, lazy cat.
A hungry street cat would be much better.
Not Top Cat though, he'd probably get rid of you as well as the mice.

    Just keep putting down the traps. You do not really need rentokil etc. unless there are hundreds of them. And block up all external holes/gaps you can find in your building. You can buy this foam stuff in Woodies etc. that you squirt in to holes/gaps, and it hardens up in a few minutes. I know it is freaking you out to think of them being about, but a few facts;

    - they tend to nest and stay close to their feeding area (usaually max a few feet), so you can kill off a nest if you keep replenishing the traps. Just the cheapo little wooden ones, and peanut butter is great to attract them onto the trap.
    - they are almost blind, so they stick generally to the skirting board area to move about, where they can use their whiskers to tap off the side to navigate, so put traps there, with the food bit of the trap at the wall side.
    - if you want to see where they are emerging into your room(s), and their run, sprinkle talcum powder all around the skirting boards, you can easily see then. you can vacuum it up afterwards. I helps you decide where to put the traps.
    - keep no foods in ground level cupboards if possible. keep foods in closed plastic containers, especially rice, cereals, porridge. Do not leave plates with food remenants on countertops overnight etc., always rinse them off. Remove their most attractive food sources.
    - they are scared of you, they do not want to encounter you !

Have told them several times that it has been an on going problem, also told them about my total freak outs about the whole thing.
My rent is due next week, going to tell them tomorrow that i am moving out, and hopefully won't have to give them a months notice. As soon as I find someplace else I will move in ASAP, if I have to pay rent in too places I will just have to do that, can't really afford to but my sanity is in short supply right now!

The scared thing is a 2 way street at the moment!
Have pretty much stopped eating at home because I'm so freaked. Have only cooked once in about 3 weeks, and I like to cook.

It's a rented house, there were some traps set when I moved in but decided to ignore them and now there are mice, have caught several in traps, have seen some, totally freaked out at that, there were tears!
It's got to the point where I'm not sleeping and am paranoid even walking around the house. Yes, I know they are harmless, but I hate them, give me spiders any day.
Have told Landlord and was told they would call Rentokil, that was weeks ago. Have to move out, but looks like I am going to end up paying rent on 2 places for a month.
    Really not happy.

There is no way you should have to get stung by losing your deposit by having to leave early. The landlord should be reasonable about it - your home is uninhabitable. Talk to the PTRB if needs be :

Haven't yet told them I am moving out. They may be fine about it and not expect me to give a months notice and just accept that I am going to move as soon as I have some place new.
To be honest, until just now I hadn't even thought about my deposit, which would go along way if I do end up having to pay double rent.
They are nice people, even if they haven't sorted out the mouse situation, so I hope they will be all right about it all.
I don't actually have a lease, so I don't know where that leaves me regard giving notice, etc.

I suggest sitting down for a Tom and Jerry marathon, might get some ideas.

4am and I'm still awake, can't sleep, just in case... (not entirely sure what!)
Tomorrow is not going to be a happy day.

    920 - Rent - a - Ferret

ferrets are like the special forces of mouse killers, you can rent them i think

Have you tried Storm rodenticide? You can get it in Woodies and probably Atlantic Homecare. I think it completely dehydrates the creatures within 2 days of them eating it.

    Nice!

Had mice years back, so I got the humane traps in woodies, caught and released them, then got a cat. No more mice.

I've just had a dose of mice OP.

I'm pretty scared of them as well but managed to harden the **** up enough to kill them as soon as I realised I had them.

I bought the reusable traps. the brand I bought were called Big Cheese.

    http://images.caraselledirect.com/500w/insect_pest_control/big_cheese_quick_click_mouse_trap_shut_open.jpg

They kill the mouse and you can dispose of it without ever touching it, then use the same trap again.

For all the noise, there only ended up being 4 of them!

Also, that thing about borrowing a cat doesn't work at all. Cats usually only hunt their own territories so you'd have to keep it for ages before it would start treating your house as its territory.

    Best of luck!

I'd like to recommend my old favourite....a blow torch , burn everything.

^^^^ I love the smell of burning rodent fur in the morning..........

Harden the f*ck up OP, they're only bloody mice. One thing though, if you're going to use bait, or indeed traps, wear gloves. Not only because that bait is nasty sh1t, but if the mice smell you off the bait or traps, they'll be a lot less likely to go near it. Also, don't put out too much bait, if you do, they'll simply carry it back to their nest instead of eating it there and then.

Much the same as rats really. We had rats for a while after building our new home, those rat traps make some racket when they go off, some teeth on them too (rats and traps!!). Unfortunately for the rat, he didn't die straight away, there was quite a bit of squealing for a while. However, that seemed to do the trick as the other rats cleared out of the place after that.

They go along walls as mentioned, the trap should be placed perpendicular into the wall, so the bait/trip is in at the wall and they have a clear run over it on both sides. Otherwise it is 50/50 if they come across the back end of the trap first and might cop on its dodgy.

They are meant to be suspect of new things and could knock a trap to test it. I read an exterminator suggested leaving down unset traps with bait, this way they are meant to get used to the new device in their room, grow to trust it to get food, then you set it.

You have to leave the cat alone for it to catch the mice. Borrow a cat, go out for the day and when you come back you shouldn't have anymore mice.

Poor Mice.... I really like them and was even thinking of getting them as pets, either them or pet rats.

Borrow a cat and put about 10 traps down and keep them set. Mouse problem will be gone in a few days

are you going to do anything, or are you just going to keep telling us how scared you are?[/QUOTE]

Have traps set all over the house, got some poison (but the thought of dead bodies around is almost as bad as living ones). Have a cat moved in.
Oh and have found some place new to live, will be moving in the next week or so.
    Is that sufficient doing?
