fading / blurring

When tattoos fade is it because the ink seeps outwards, or that ink wears off and the design shrinks inwards. I am trying to design one that won't blur badly and need to know whether it's likely to expand or contract over time.

i dont know as much as others here but the placement greatly affects the fading of a tattoo. if its on your hands or feet it wont last more then a few years without needing a top up.

It's more of a 'bleeding' effect, where the lines can blur, as time goes on and skin cells are replaced.
