Chatting with the barber

I used to say nothing and just sit there without a word between us. With each visit conversation grew to more than two words. Now it's like chatting to an old friend. Great craic altogether.

So do you chat to the barber when he's cutting your hair, or do you sit in silence staring in the mirror the duration of the haircut? If not, why?

It's like the conversation with the Taxi Driver.

'So you busy today?' 'What time you finish up at ?'

Do talk a bit depending on who's cutting my hair lol.

I find it all very weird.

There's a stranger, cutting me with a scissors and moving their hands over my head like it's going out of style, which it might be if they are shít at their job.

    depends who's on

I want him to cut my hair and get it the way I want it, not daydreaming and thinking about whatever we end up talking about though, so not much just to be polite I suppose

I go to a Turkish barber at the moment and he is a nice enough chap but the standard of english he has kind of rules out anything but the most basic conversations, always do if it's an option though.

I used always talk to my old one about GAA because he was from Cork and I'm from Kerry so there was always a bit of banter.

I find the older ya get the more you feel obliged to make conversation with people. I used to never say anything to the barber and absolutely hate it when he spoke to me. But for some reason now (even though its not been same barber) I feel the need to strike up a conversation, same as I do wherever I am.

Absolutely hate small talk, I'll gladly chat the ear off him if I have an interest in the topic football etc. but chatting about weather, jobs etc. nah.. not for me

Actually remember someone claiming their barber said to an oul fella "how would ya like your hair cut?" to which the old guy replied "in silence!"

That seems a bit rude, and would add the risk of your ear been cut off.

Barber: 'In silence then I shall cut your ears off then, your grumpy old man.'

I think it might have been a fib or an old joke he was trying to pass off as his own, either way it made me chuckle at the silly things old people say.

I'd imagine women just yap and yap in salons.

    Football chat isn't small talk?

I always talk about the massive intrusive hemaroids I pretend to have. That's why I think they draw straws to see who has to listen.

(actually, I cut my own hair)

I get my hair cut at the unisex hairdresser by a woman, always chatting to her good craic, she's middle aged so not trying it on or anything; haven't had a man cut my hair in years.

If you don't talk to me, I'll give you a tip.

Not this woman. In fact, I can hardly think of anything I hate more than sitting with some stranger in my personal space while I'm forced to trust them altering my appearance. It's actually so close to my idea of hell that I've cut out (pardon the pun) going altogether

Where do you cut your hair? A friend do it? That'd be cheaper and it'd be a friend so you could chat.

I shave my own hair/head now...but one thing I do miss is the chat with the barber..always loved it.

I go to the same barbers the whole time. Three people work there. Two men and one woman.

Barber number 1 just chats away no problem and you have a laugh with him.

The woman is very good looking and is Polish with average english. Very little conversation is had because i'm trying my best not to look as if i'm at myself under the sheet thing they put around you.

With the second dude it always starts out friendly enough when he's working on the back of my head but it gets quieter when he is cutting the sides though. He's about 6.6 and seems to be well endowed as his crotch does be glued to my shoulder.

Yeah it's a bit awkward when my hands are on the arms of the chair and his elton johns are rubbing off my hand. :/

This is my problem with barbers insofar as many subscribe to the idea that abstaining from eating meat is somehow a nobler deed than not washing your face.

My hairdresser gives me a cup of tea, biscuits and magazines so we don't have to talk to each other.

There's a Turkish man and a Polish woman working in my local barbers. I have a bit of a chat with the Turkish dude, but try and keep my mouth shut with the Polish woman. Dragon breath doesn't even begin to describe her horrendously bad breath. Either she gargles with **** or something has actually died in her mouth. I seriously have to change barber....

Dear god man! Keep your hands in your lap! I'd much rather be acused of fiddling with myself under the sheet than accidently brush anyone's trouser snake....

Last hair cut I got was down in Limerick by a woman in a barbers the time the woman died from having sex with a dog. Pretty interesting conversation!

God that's a while ago, need a haircut badly but I'm growing it for Halloween. I'm going as Han Solo.

First they came for the socialists...
