    Hey guys..

Was just wondering if anyone has had an interview in modern languages yet??

Also, if you're qualified to teach two subjects, do you get 'tested' on both during the interview? (I'm pretty sure the answer is no, but I'm just looking for someone to put my mind at ease!) :)

Hi everyone has anyone secured a 12 hour placement in a school for the TP?

I was just randomly looking through this thread and your after frightening the life out of me Ashm14.

I have a place on the Hibernia Dip as well but I haven't even begun thinking about the placement yet because I can't get any information from Hibernia other than the general details about the course.

    Have you a placement sorted?!

Hi charliebear, I dont know if this helps or not but one of my subjects is Irish so half my interview was in Irish like the primary one. Not sure if it will be the same for you with modern languages or not ! Also to smull 2 I got my placement sorted and Im already doing some subbing for the school I am going to be in. The principal thought it would be good if the students see me straight away from the beginning of the year so I am helping out with whatever I can! :)

Hi I am the same as 10.9

The school I will be on placement in also thought it would be a good idea to do hours in the school beforehand in order for the students to get to know you. I have been in the school since Monday and will be doing some classes in my own subjects so it won't be too much of a shock when I start on placement!

Congrats to both of ye on getting it sorted so quickly, I am just finishing up my thesis for my MA so I was hoping to leave it until after it was done but I better get the placement sorted ASAP!

Hey, im employed as secondary teacher so im doing the TP in the school I work in. Im already taking classes so I have a relationship with the students by feb. I work in a school with small numbers so was very concerned at not getting the 12 hours, I rang hibernia and they are very strict on getting exactly 12hrs so it will prob be a struggle but it will just have to work!
I would advise that you get on to schools as the nui&trinity dips will have secured placement after their offers out in april/may so we're getting in a bit late in the game. Also 12 hrs is alot to be lopking for, most dips do 5-8 hrs over the year rather then 12 over four weeks. I would look at schools with big numbers that would be able to offer 12 hours in your subject area.

Hope that helps, let us know how you get on .

Hey 10.9, my first subject is Irish too, did the primary interview last week and got offered a place today but would rather do the post primary, my interview for that is this Wednesday!

Just wondering what kind of questions they asked you, if you can remember at all(I know it can be a bit of a blur once you're in there)?? :-)

    Thanks!

So basically, some schools are giving unqualified teachers subbing?

This has been the case for a long time

A lot of schools are not employing unqualified teachers as directed.
It is more than understandable that qualified teachers who are unemployed and can't get a sniff of a job let alone subbing are annoyed to see unqualified people getting subbing and hours in schools. Roll on the date that it is going to be tightly enforced. I believe that day is coming soon. I know a girl who lost the remainder of a maternity leave job as she wasn't qualified.

Not anymore maybe but VEC schools used to employ teachers without dips

VEC are definitely changing. My local VEC won't let people on the subbing panel unless fully qualified and registered with the Teaching Council. I know this is the case in a neighbouring VEC too. Proper order.

How did you all go about sorting teaching placement? Did u just ring principals or drop up cvs? I've rang a few principals and left my number with no call backs yet. Should I call again? I know it's a really bust period but am so anxious to get a placement. Finding it very hard with other colleges already sorted. Would love feedback on how you all did it. Did you ring your old schools or principals you know?? I'm totally lost on what to do cause phone calls have got me nowhere yet! Thanks everyone!

    Hi 10.9

Thanks for your reply.. Did they just ask you general questions in Irish, or were you expected to answer more specific questions like teaching methods and how you would deal with a difficult student etc?

    Hi Everyone,

I only sent my application on Friday and they rang me this morning and my interview in tomorrow evening.. Everything has happened very fast, I am excited and nervous..

If anyone has had an interview could you please give me some tips?.. Do they ask about both your subjects (mine English and History) or just your first?

Thank you and I appreciate any help

    Hi xbridnix,

My first subject was English and they didn't ask me anything about my second subject Geography. Here is the list of questions that I got asked in my interview I hope it helps! :)

Why do you want to be a teacher?

How do you think teaching has changed since you were in Secondary school?

Communication is important, how do you think you would communicate with parents in difficult situations?

Technology in the classroom is important now, where do you think the balance is in terms of advantages and disadvantages of its use?

How do you think you will be able to portray the message you are teaching across to students who are so immersed in media and technology when you are competing with these things?

What was your favorite module in your degree and Why?

The low levels of literacy skills are prominent at the moment, how would you combat this in the first three years of second level education?

The teaching of poetry is difficult as students are disinterested in it, how would go about creating interest in poetry?

What is your opinion of continuous assessment vs end of term examination and what do you think is an effective outcome?

Do you think group work is an effective teaching tool in a classroom?

Best of luck with the interview!!

Schools are still mental busy at the moment. Your best bet is to call into a school and speak directly to the principal and wait around for him/her if you have to.

Thanks so much for the tips, they really helped me.. Everything you said pretty much came up... They seem to emphasis on continuous assessment.. Interview seemed to go well.. I made them laugh which I always think is a good sign haha... Thanks again, hopefully see you at induction :):)

Hi charliebear and marty 22 sorry im late getting back to u, irish was my first subject but the interview questions as gaeilge were fine. They asked general questions ar first, easy ones like about yourself sport and the gaelteacht and things, then about what type of traits does a good teacher have and would i like to be a principle? What changes would i make if i was principle ( mc). It was all fairly basic nothing harder than your oral every year at college. If you got through your irish degree ok then you will find d irish bit grand!

Hi, just wondering what questions they asked you about Geography and what curriculum based questions they asked? Geography is my subject too so want to get as much information as possible. Thanks..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12 Marty.22

In geog they asked why so many students do it for the leaving cert but without saying it was an easy subject! Also asked my opinion on continuous assessment for leaving cert, my favourite aspect of the geography syllabus and how I'd teach it!
