Independent Waterford TD John Halligan has become the first TD of the new Dáil term to be thrown out of the house.

He was asked to leave the chamber after objecting to the amount of time allowed for a debate on the recent job losses at TalkTalk in his native county.

He complained that he was only allowed one minute and ten seconds to air his views.

And after angry exchanges the Ceann Comhairle Sean Barrett ordered him to leave.

Last week's 575 job losses at TalkTalk were the subject of the first of the new 'Topical Issues' debates in the chamber.

Waterford Deputies Ciara Conway and Paudie Coffey called for a concentration by state agencies on jobs crisis in the area.

Jobs Minister Richard Bruton said that would happen, saying a cross-departmental response was being implemented.

It is awful about all the job losses in Waterford, but I dont think there is much the government can do

Cheers enniscorthy, for the post with more info.

I understand they each can't go on for ever in time but the time they do have to speak, does indeed seem a bit short.
We have enough soundbites from our politicians outside the Dail. The last thing we also need is to have rules that helps to just create more within it.

I love the way people are always giving out about politicians on this forum, sayin there good for nothing do nothing are a waste of time etc.

Then when it seems like he wants time for important issues to be discussed people them call him a time waster. whats up with that.

Grandstanding in such a fashion, what did it achieve? What was it going to achieve? The square root of fück all is the answer, FYI.

Where was he when the place was closing, even if he was at ground zero, what could he do?

Independent, niche politicians are as useless as tits on a bull unless of a small majority in the house and then all they do is hold the country to ransom to save their own electoral ass through some hair-brained, white elephant scheme that will keep the rabble in their constituency happy.

No matter, just as long as some idiot waving himself around in the Dail isn't going to be feted as a hero .

Although some of the punters in here could be taken in.

    ALWAYS CHECK THE VESTED INTEREST.;)

Nothing but a failed attempt at showboating by Halligan to get himself in the local papers and radio back in Waherferd.

If they can't make their points in 70 seconds they should STFU. There's far too much waffling and not enough action.

    Less TalkTalk, more ActionAction...
