There's a whole load of complicit people still operating in the government and civil service marcsignal. Our chance to change things and prosecute those responsible will have to wait 'till after the next general election.

I agree, the rot is deep rooted and pervasive.

I don't know what it's going to take, but it has to be done. This crapology about Judges refusing to take a pay cut is another example.
WTF do they think they are ? Do they believe they are the equivalent of 'Landed Gentry' ?

Do you know what - it might be no harm to do it!

We may lie down most of the time but if there's one thing we do have in abundance it is pride.

If this was done we might stop taking the sh1t and insist on decent politicians with a strong business background to get us out of this mess!

And remember how everyone got up on their high horses when the German Ambassaor dared to speak the truth back in '07.

    Everyone? really?

Dermot Ahern, Gay Mitchell and a big fat pensioned civil servant did according to that report.

    So, not everyone.

PS I agreed with the ambassador at the time.

I think it's FF and their supporters who have humiliated us, to be honest. Any pointless optics are mild by comparison.

C'mon 4leto, this guys inane suggestion deserves an appropriate response.
Jeez what does he expect ?

Having said that, I understand why the Germans are frustrated though. They don't do slackers in Germany, everybody does their bit, and in doing so you can avail of the excellent transport system, excellent beer, excellent healthcare, excellent social services for the elderly and disabled, safe to walk the streets etc etc. They don't put up with nonsense from anyone. You wont milk the system in Germany and get away with it.

I can understand when they look at us, and Greece, and get pissed off with all of the 'cute hoor jiggery pokery' going on. If we're serious about getting out of this shit, we're going to have to be as firm, but fair, on our own people, as they are with theirs. If you were living in Germany, and told your German friends you didn't want to work, you would be boxed off socially, nobody would want to be associated with you.

My sister-in-law works in welfare in Dublin, and you wouldn't believe the scamming going on. They know it happens, and in many cases they know who's doing it, but they haven't the rescources to deal with it.

If you don't play ball in Germany you don't get a cent, full stop. 'Resistance is Futile' to coin a phrase.

Still think this guys suggestion about the flag is totally moronic though.

Absolute nonsense. There are bums, beggars, cute hoors, and thieves in Germany too. And plenty of them too, you are believing the stereotype.

and when they are caught they are jailed, not slapped on the back and admired by their cabal.

I like Germany's cognitive dissonance in this whole affair - completely and totally ignoring their role in keeping interest rates so low that it helped overheat the PIIGS countries in the first place. That and the fact their banks would be ****ed if we/Greece/Italy/Spain got into default territory.

Yup, and didn't they and France break the unbreakable Euro rule on deficits at the start of the millenium while the rest of us satellite states will get to have our national flags lowered to halfmast whilst the German and French dwarf leaders ponce around Europe making matters worse for the past three years and possibly next three as well
Phuck them and the panzer they rode in on.:p

Oil companies have applied for 15 drilling licences to drill of our west coast,

That I am afraid is our only hope, which isn't much.

I suppose the calls in Europe will get louder for even greater austerity measures here,

You can't accuse Germany of that the reason the money markets was over supplied is because the world has a glut in savers and they are mainly Chinese.

Honest question.... Do you think that if FG or Labour were in power at the time of the bank guarantee or Nama that things would of panned out differently?

Thanks for the giggle. I am reminded of the English newspaper editorial on the eve of the 1966 WC final. "if tomorrow the Germans beat us at our national sport we should not be too upset. After all we have beaten them twice at theirs".

I heard a German comedian (yes they have them and he was good) on one of those British stand up shows. He said to the British audience I was confused during the world cup. I kept hearing the English fans shouting "2 world wars and 1 world cup"......I never knew the Americans won a world cup,,,they booed him,:D

    We'll never know that.

I prefer to deal with what happened...not supposition of what MIGHT have happened.

Can we please differentiate "Germany" and "The German Government"?

I've spoken to Germans about what's going on and a lot of them are absolutely disgusted by their own government's behavior as well, just as most of us are disgusted by our last government's behavior.

Would you want someone to judge Ireland's people by the actions of FF?

I loathe the German government with an absolute passion but let's leave the rest of the German nation out of this - most of it isn't very fond of them either.
Aren't most of them annoyed (rightly IMO) for their government being far too generous to us, the Greeks and the rest.

In other words, he wants to shame Ireland and stick our imposed shame on a pole so that others can see it.
He wants to humilate us (and others) it looks like, to me!

With all due respect to the rest of all good and better German people - this guy is an utter gobschite!
If he wants to do something with an Irish flag pole - he should try shoving it up his ass!

    Hitler would have been proud.

Honest answer - we'll never know.

Maybe it's optimism or hope that the relative lack of corruption and cronyism would have saved us, because if FG and Labour turn out to be as bad as FF then we may as well close the door.

That said, in order to be in power at the time of the guarantee they'd have had to be in power for the previous year or more, and at least wouldn't have been distracted by their disgraced leader taking centre-stage; they also have at least SOME competent heads in the likes of Michael Noonan.

But there is no definitive answer.

That, however, doesn't change the fact that it was FF who made the astronomical f**kup.

Nah, we deserve more than anyone else. Even though Germans are coming here for telesales jobs rather than using their qualifications in Germany and can have as good or better quality of life here and still put together a nice pile of savings.

(didn't read the whole thread, sorry when the following was already mentioned)

Calm down and don't take it too seriously what that Öttinger-guy said.

He is a laughing stock in Germany for years, especially since he proclaimed that everyone should speak English to be taken seriously in the world.
    And then this:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZ2Pz4naZPs :D
(probably only Germans see the funny side in this one)

He kept a low profile since then, but apparently couldn't keep his gob shut for too long. Everyone in the EU-parliament is outraged or rather embarrassed by his extremely silly remarks.

He is one of those politicians who were shoved off to the EU-parliament because he was too useless, in his case as a prime minister (for Baden-Württemberg).

    Suebians... :D
