A grades are not as easy to come by in CSPE as many here seem to think.

i know right! cspe is soo overrated, it actually DOES require a decent amount of work, the writing up of the project takes a lot of time and effort.. its certainly not as easy as everyone thinks it is ..

Time and effort in class which doesn't count. I never looked at my CSPE book to study even right before the test.

Time and effort in class clearly counts.

No it doesn't. You're going to spend time and effort in class anyway. To say "CSPE requires time and effort" without saying "in class" as well, you imply that you need to study for CSPE, which you don't.

Unless you're saying (and I agree) that it counts to put in time and effort in class and we have a misunderstanding. Time and effort in class counts, but not as time and effort.

I'm saying that you need to put in time and effort for your project, which isn't neccesarily done in class.

The point is that CSPE shouldn't be seen as a "doss class" where you just do nothing and relax, and then then expect an A grade after sitting the exam.

totally my point.. i had to do a lot of the writing up of the project at home cuz we always seemed to miss our weekly cspe class, and ur right matthew8, no one actually opens any books to study for cspe, because the actual exam doesnt need studying for..

About one in four people doing CSPE get an A.

Because that's the way they fix it.

    I see.

So, the thinking would be everyone thinks it's easy and they are going to get an A so the SEC says, 'I'll show you all!'

The thinking is that they don't want to undermine the subject by giving everyone an A.

...or maybe they mark it as told and don't give a crap if people think it's an easy A?

It's about twice as easy to get an A in CSPE as other subjects, but look at how many people predicting their results think it's a definite A.
    It's not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,472 ✭✭✭SChique00

I personally think it's an easy A if you've got a smidgen of common knowledge of current affairs and you watch the news once in a while.

We never did anything in CSPE for the entire 3 years when it came to the book - I'd say we opened it twice (on the same page). Usually most people would "forget" to bring them in, so we wouldn't be able to do work. I spent AGES on the action project report and was very happy with how it turned out, but I just winged the test, tbh...

I'd say a lot of people failed the picture matching question, and the filling in the gaps, but the sentence answers involved tactical bullsh!tting, and everyone I talked to opted for the poster question, like me.

I feel if the class was made more interesting and taken outside the classroom a bit more it could've been really simulating, but I couldn't really be bothered about it now... that said, it'd be nice to do well, and I think my knowledge of world events and shizz stood me well ;)

Woah I didn't expect it to be so looooooooooooong :o

I've been thinking a lot more about results lately, overthinking central. Latest worry is that my handwriting for English was so bad that the examiner will automatically hate me and do everything in his/her power to mark me down. I'm not sure if this is irrational or not. Regardless, sigh.

It depends how bad it is.

If it is illegible, yes, you will lose marks as no one will know what you have written. The correctors cannot give a mark if they cannot read the answer you have written.

Messy is annoying to correct, as there really is no excuse unless you have some physical difficulty. Bad handwriting (from anyone, doctors, workmen, anyone) for many people screams 'lazy and couldn't be bothered'.

It's something you could sort out with a small bit of effort.

Look, regardless of how you did, the examiner's objective is to try and give you as many marks as possible for your work. So whatever you get will just be proof that you have gotten the best mark you could for the work you did.... try not to worry yourself until necessary, when you're gushing down the phone or into the shoulders of your parents.
I don't think I did well in English either, and it's my favourite subject, and a lot of people I've spoken to feel the same - you're not on your own on this one :)

Ah well I don't think mine was illegible per se, just...taking perhaps a bit more effort to read. Don't think paper one was too bad, paper two on the other hand...

Errr yeah my handwriting is fairly bad, it's not too bad when I slow down a bit, like for most of my other exams it was even neat, just English I ended up being fairly tight on time. Guess I'd rather do it messily and get it finished than do it like a scribe and not get it finished. Must work on combining the two for the big LC...Oh, and I thought doctors writing was purposely messy? I'd be a pro at writing prescriptions anyway...

Also, @SChique00, that actually made me feel loads better, English is the one thing that I've just always been good at and it's the one subject I desperately want an A in. I should stop thinking, August was a lovely result-free month without a care for any of this.

Tension starting to reach fever pitch now

    History B

    English C

Maths D (thought i failed pres ended up with 54 %, found actual jc easier so possible c but i doubt it)

    Irish B

    Geography C

Science D(If lucky, found extremely difficult)

French A( Could slip to b, got a in pres but it will be borderline)

    Business C

Tech Graph D(please god, hated this subject with a passion, failed pres, hoping for nice corrector!)

    C.S.P.E A

    All higher level

I'm predicting a few surprises, just hoping I pass everthing.... Did little to no work all year, really regretting that now... But if I pass all, it should go down fine as long as I get the the bankers, cspe, french, history a or b in...

    Maths C
    Irish D
Science C (Haven't a clue to be honest! Although i could see myself sneaking a B)
Geography B/A (Definitely my best chance at an A!)
    History B
    English C
    Woodwork C
    Technology C
CSPE B (Suprisingly people in my class struggled to get over a C in tests for it and I got A's but i didnt put much effort at all into the poster as my friends were done and i could see them outside the window....)
    French C

Theyre all honours, besides CSPE, I hope i do better then these grades though.

Statistics to back up this claim?

You can see the statistics for the 2010 Junior cert results here. 23% of people got an A in CSPE last year and 43% got Bs. All of the past statistics are available here aswell.

When I say this people disagree with me, but I believe it is best to keep your expectations low to fair, and then you can't be disappointed. Some people say think positively and positivity will flow from you, but this won't change the examiner's feelings towards your work, will it? If you do well, that's brilliant, but if you don't, remember it's just an exam and it doesn't determine your worth as a person. EG, I love English and it's (supposed to be) my best subject, but I really messed up the exam. That said, I know I put in 3 years worth of hard graft and I don't need a letter on a page to verify this (although it would be nice to get an A!).
Your grades look acheivable and here's hoping you get what you want :D best of luck to all - not long to go now! :o

Good Point! I don't want to get ahead of myself so im thinking of the lowest mark i got rather then the highest :o Hopefully this will lead to me being pleasantly suprised :)
