If you have removed the SATA drive from the enclosure simply put it into the pc and see if the bios detects it, it should just detect it as another internal drive, if the drive is not detected at this stage you probably won't be able get the data back this way, when windows boots the drive should appear under my computer so just copy the content to a good drive from here, I have found in the past that Total Commander works well for this purpose, some files may not copy, I reccomend starting with important stuff first, then on to the least important

Your data is 100% recoverable, all the data is on the drive, so be careful how you handle it.

If the PC does not detect it, you could buy a replacement of the same type external case & put it into that, backup data, format & then put it in the PC.

You could then put ther newer HDD back into the case and you have the external HDD & a new 1TB in your PC.

Backup you data to both of these in future!

I have put in my pc and no look due to the fact I have only the one cable to go into it no power cable just the other one. But the hard drive was turning on but have no idea where to find it in vista. Is it in Computer or where else might I find it ?

I have one of these I could loan you if you live near me.

It works on 3 different types of HDD.

You need to get a molex to SATA power adaptor, Peats do these for a few euro, if its a SATA cable you need just get one for a few euro in peats and it should be good, try not to be booting the drive up too often, as the more times its booted the less chance of data recovery

There should be two cables going into the back of the hard drive:
A SATA cable, short narrow one which goes from drive to motherboard
A SATA power plug which is a longer flat plug with a cable extending from the power supply.
The drive won't work without both of those. If your power supply only has one SATA power cable do whay I suggest and buy a Molex to SATA adaptor, I baught one in Peats or Maplins cant remember for 3 or so quid, cheap enough and do the job, could probably get it cheaper online

Those SATA to USB things generally aren't relyable. Hence I reccomend the Molex to SATA power route

That's not the one I bought but mine did what I need it for just getting files off old HDD's.
I also do what Nick said.I had a few broken ext HD's I took apart and use the part the cable goes into for a few Hd's.
