Rather than following tabloid headlines which take quotes from forecasters and then twist them for dramatic effect it's best to just look in on the weather forum. Straight from the horse's mouth.

If I hear one person in Dublin for example complaining how it was just a wet day...... The far north and north west will get the proper damaging gusts. Dublin will not, so please don't :D

Only as unusual as there being a bit of weather on the way! ;-)

That is pretty a awesome site I must say .:)

Surf report for Lahinch looks impressive. Was out in a couple of 15ft swells before and they felt pretty awesome, can't imagine what 20ft would be like with that wind.

This is what the old surfers will be looking forward to this weekend...

Not sure if someone already asked this, but if it's causing 7 metre waves off the US coast, and it gets weaker as it moves eastwards, how can it cause 15 metre waves off the coast of Ireland?

    Have just worked it out.

    39.3700787 X 7 X 666/3257 X 32

    39.3700787 ............. inches in a metre
7 ........................... height of waves in metres in US
666 .........................the number of the Bert
3257 ........................miles from US coast to David Norris' jacuzzi in Dublin
32 .......................... number of counties in Ireland

    Answer: 1.761046465" high (in Athlone)
And Smart Asses, don't bother checkin'. Have calculated the lot on my new Android :p[/SPOILE

Looks like Dublin will miss the majority of the severe conditions. Don't know if I'm happy or disappointed about that!

    It's 2 days away.

Since when have Met Eireann ever gotten anything right more than 6 hours out?

It'll all blow over folks, no need to be afraid.

Well, it's not as if it takes much skill to spot a bloody great big hurricane heading in this general direction. They can use the Europe results from the Global Forecast System (GFS), which models weather for the whole planet. It's generally accurate over the short term, while forecasts get iffy the further ahead you look. The consensus is: some wind Saturday night, a lot of wind Sunday night.

From out there on the moon, international politics look so petty. You want to grab a politician by the scruff of the neck and drag him a quarter of a million miles out and say, ‘Look at that, you son of a bitch’.

A quick glance at the weather forum will show you head scratching and disappointment. The storm will probably be too far north to make much of an impact on most of Ireland outside of the far north and north-west.

The wind and the rain here, I think its already arrived.

This is just a run of the mill weather system at the moment. The remains of Katia will be following behind.

The only reason it's called Katia is because Katrina was retired as a name after 2005.

They stop repeating names of storms if one particular named storm had a devastating and historic impact. There'll never be another Hurricane Katrina. I wouldn't be surprised if Irene was also retired as a name after this year.
