I find the ability to see myself in the reflection of the screen a feature of the macbook.

Also you can get an anti-glare screen for extra on some models.

Did you ever use a glare display when the sun was brigthly shining through the window?

    ^ Win.

And I've been living with the misconception that 8GB is pretty much a necessity. Sigh, reality is harsh.

I think mac's gorgeous as hell and the dell xps 15z is a terrible copy of it(although its a pretty decent lappie).
Vaios aren't really great, they just have killer aesthetics. You're better off spending your cash elsewhere.

Thanks, if I had known that I could have saved my money buying a matte screen.

The solution though is to never open your curtains, or move to the basement.

Aesthetics of a laptop shouldn't even come into it when purchasing imo

Tbh I don't think it matters what piece of hardware you use to browse reddit instead of paying attention in lectures as long as it works for you (cos that's what it's used for 99% of the time :P).

This might sound a bit mad since it's CS, but the type of computer you use really doesn't matter very much in first year at all. There's always lab and DUCSS/Netsoc machines, and laptops are really just more of a bonus.

IMO a good pen and some paper will do you the best, as it forces you to write code on paper (which is needed for the exams), and some classes it's just silly to have a laptop out in (Mainly DLD. If you have a laptop don't even bother taking your lappy out for Digital Logic).

Okay, ignoring aesthetics, macbooks still have the best build quality, hardware support, tech support (if you pay for it) and battery life of any laptop on the market today. You may not like apple but they make excellent laptops.

I don't want to derail this thread but... You are instantly defending mac and assuming I don't like them :p

I don't doubt what you say. They are excellent machines and I'm sure they are the best build quality, but they are overpriced for what you get. Plus it pisses me off that a ton of my not-so-tech-savy friends buy them purely for their aesthetics

Wouldn't say the best, Lenovos are also great, but both are somewhat cost-prohibitive.

Not the best build quality, lenovo definitely win out there. A good Thinkpad is basically indestructible. They're even designed to drain safely if someone spills liquid on them.

    Like coffee.

Oh wow. I've had drinks spilled on my laptop several times (almost always rum and coke for some mysterious reason), and the keyboard did not much appreciate it. (I'm now entirely missing the P key and the I key is gonna go soon...) Probably also the rest of the laptop. FWIW, I have a Dell (pictured above) and it's coming up to 3 years old, has a battery life of ~5 minutes and idles at 50 degrees.

Yep! I have also had a couple of spilled drink scares, never pleasant, especially when dissolved sugar and keyboard keys are involved :(. There's some vids on youtube of Thinkpad torture tests. Pouring drinks on them, dropping them, applying pressure to them etc. All pretty impressive. If i had the cash, i'd definitely get one to replace my Dell before it fries itself (and my legs...).

You first years have basically the same wednesday we had... you're gonna love that :D

Don't worry, it gets a lot better in term 2 when you end up with a 3 hour break then.
