The first news event I can remember seeing on telly was Bloody Sunday in Derry.

I was too young to understand what was going on, but my Dad who normally was always calm, got very upset.

A lot of neighbours came to our house that night to watch the news on telly, and insisted in having a rosary afterwards. That really scared the sh1t out of me.

Watching Cartoons in my nans on a Saturday afternoon when the show interupted to show a 'News Flash'. Never seen a news flash before except on fictional TV shows.

The RTE news reader said that there were a number of people killed in an explosion in Northern Ireland, some town called Omagh. I didn't think much of it at the time but I've never forgotten it.

Elvis dying, 1977, i was 4 and myself and my sister had a little transistor radio tied to the end of the bunk bed and when it was announced on the radio i ran in to tell my parents. Not sure if they were more shocked that he had died or that i knew who he was!

Yes, I remember hearing about Elvis dying on the radio as well. That probably is the first, actually. His songs were playing back-to-back on the radio for days.

Probably Diana's death. But it's watching the funeral I remember, not the breaking news of her death.

When condoms went on sale for the 1st time in Ireland.

I think I was in 1st class or something, and the teacher said we had to go home and watch the news and come in with one story, she picked a bad time to give us that exercise.

A bunch of kids shouting about johnies all day was not what she expected.

Probably Elvis dying in 77. I was 4 at the time and remember my gran coming in from work saying how daft it was that all the women at work were crying over it.

Going on from the Where were you questions being asked about Sept 11 2001, what is the first 'News Event' you remember where you were etc?

For me I think it was the Space Shuttle Challenger blowing up in January 86. Will always remember being in the local shop buying milk or something and Radio 2 being on, and they cut into the middle of a song to announce it.

The space shuttle challenger was mine as well.

Reason being, before it happened I had a school project where we needed to create a fictional front page newspaper story. I wrote a story about the shuttle blowing up after launch, even drew a nice little picture of it.

After the disaster a tiny part of me has always somehow felt responsible. It was creepy to say the least.

Death of Elvis Presley...I was about three and a half, in my babysitter's house on a sunny summer evening and a newflash came on the telly...I didn't know who Elvis was but the shuushing by adults and the tone of the newsreader made me aware that this was fairly important. I have this very vivid yet dreamy image of the room, me sitting on the floor, the sun coming in through closed curtaiins and the newsreader breaking in on whatever was on TV.

    The ones that would stick in my head would be;
Larry Goodman & some Beef tribunal (remember thinking at the time there was feck all talk about beef or cattle)
    The X case

or perhaps sporting events (italia '90) but not counting that as news.

I remember the 1st Gulf war and my father buying a Diesel car in response to the high petrol prices as a result of the war. I didn't understand much but can remember it as I was around 3 or 4.

My first big news event I remember that I understood was Veronica Guerin's Murder and Germany beating England by penalties in Euro 96 on the same day, I was 9 at the time.

Johnny Logan's win at Eurovision in '87. I was three at the time and would sing the song for my aunts and cousins to keep them amused.
