ooohhh interesting. Any idea how much it costs?
    Why would you bother?
Seriously, there's a million and one other things to do that don't involve having SKY.

sheesh calm down. It's just a way to watch a movie or something with flat mates and talk about it instead of all trying to huddle round one laptop while the furthest guy away from the laptop constantly asks what the guy just said in the movie.

IMHO, getting a tv was the worst thing our apartment did either year I was in halls (quite a few of my apartment are boardsies and they'll agree)
We used to have people over all the time, would stay up late talking having fun, then the tv came, people stopped coming over and we just sat up all night staring at a screen...
Tv- maybe, but deffo wouldn't get sky. It's just not worth it when you have 100Mb internet right there!

I know, I don't mind though. Do I just need to take an Ethernet cable with me?

The HEANET line is actually Gigabit but I dont know the limitations on the Halls link(note: this is not the most reliable :P) but in any case the whole system is levelled, you will never actually get anything more than like 20Mb and thats just for a peak.

The other things to note are the restrictions of the proxy. No gaming unless you can run it through 80/443, not torrents, some problems with streams, and the annoying moments when a proxy refuses to return a page. But hey, its free, so no complaints.

Actually, no, you're wrong. The HEAnet line is 10GB going into college (at least.) They're rolling out 10GB in certain areas of college, and most desktop points in college are GB. the line in Halls is 100Mb, not 20Mb, and I can tell you from both experience and from official info this is true. I've happily hit 12MB/s at times downloading in Halls (bottleneck being the write speed of my hard drive *grumbles*)
All the traffic in college goes through a proxy, which is more of a problem than the ports being blocked (There are other open ports, 8080 for example, and 21 as FTP, not sure on 22 though)

Even if you do get past it (Which isn't difficult) everything is monitored, so expect to be cut off if you're torrenting/downloading heavily

    EDIT:
yes all you need is an ethernet cable.

All this talk of mb/s is making me dizzy. The best I can get out here is an O2 dongle which at best gives 300kb/s with 15GB limit with 190 latency.

I've learned patience at least :D.

Its too early for specs. Yes, the HEA line is 10Gb.

I'm aware that there are more than just a few ports open, but the in simple terms the restrictions are as above.

"the line in Halls is 100Mb, not 20Mb, and I can tell you from both experience and from official info this is true."

It may be the case that halls isnt balanced, but I'd be surprised by that. The rest of the student access points operate on a system whereas you are heavily throttled after a short period. Either way, contention during peak would drive practical limits down.

The line is really dead over the summer, the average usage over the last month was 0.3%D/0.8%.

Will ask the USG peeps tomorrow what the story with residential connections is :)

So they don't provide a cable? We all have to bring our own?

    facepalm???
I have a newsletter from may 2010 from ISS stating the 10GB network was due for completion in June 2010, and there was downtime over the summer, and again over this summer.
Either way, once you go past 100MB none of us are going to notice a difference unless we've got Gigabit ethernet cards, (which I don't...)

in simple terms the restrictions are "anything that can be sent as regular http/https traffic"
There's a certain amount of balancing on the entwork, as it's spread accross multiple nodes in halls, and accross multiple proxy servers on the ISS end.

Contention during peak time does drive practical limits down, but not by as much as you're suggesting. I very rarely found my speed dropping below 50Mb, and when it did there was a problem somewhere else, not just throttling.

Yeah we've got the same! So can you still download via http websites? Oh and there were some good looking basses earlier on in the thread, I'll be bringing my strat and 5watt valve amp down if anyone fancies a jam!

That's a bit extreme, Anything over 1000 is just plain taking the **** 190ms is fine, just not for games.

Just leave the heating on all day, nd all night. if itg ets too warm open the window. And invite your friends who don't live in halls over and complain about being too cold (you don't pay extra for your heating bill)

So what's the deal with piracy? I use mediafire to download music and such, which is a direct download site. Is this allowed or will I have to do all my legally dubious internet activity at home?
