    1) Normally, yes.

    2) Not many.

Though last year saw a sharp rise, from 1 or 2 to what, 6? 7? Big change from my year, where we had two in first year and now we have none!

This is true. Started with 8, ended with 6.

Just finished 3rd year there, in the middle of repeat exams to see if i go on to 4th year or have to do 3rd again. Yeah, CS isn't exactly brimming with girls, surprisingly enough :P But like I said, it's getting better! And everyone gets along well for the most part so it's not like you'll be singled out or anything.

Good luck with that, exams are a pain. Why its not exactly a manly subject. Any of you CS boardies here girls? Please be my friend.

Ho so I won't be singled out even though all I can do is play with the cat on scratch? :P

I would add to that question, when do you start bringing your laptop to classes?

Whenever you want, they're not mandated or anything, just some people like to take notes on them. It's totally up to you, if you feel the benefit of a laptop in class outweighs the potential for distraction :)

I don't know, I think I'd actually rather do it the old-fashioned way and take notes with a pen and paper.:D

That's a really good idea! I've found that when I bring my laptop to lectures I spend more time playing Scrabble and Tetris online than I do actually paying attention... :p

Laptops in class is the worst idea EVER :D

No matter how much you think you will, you will never take notes on a laptop, maybe for a week when you discover that OneNote has a lan party co-op mode..

Take notes on paper and just use the laptop in labs etc

Incoming CS students take note. Ask this year's Senior Sophisters how they will be taking notes in class.

Hey I'm a senior sophister! Not an exceptionally good one, but w/e
Pen and paper works fine. I don't own a laptop anyway. The only drawback is that you could lose hand written notes, but that is solved by not being a twat.

What sort of specs would I need in a laptop for first year?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,170 ✭✭✭✭ED E

    The eternal question...

    1. None, you dont need a laptop, having one is nice, and if the rents have offered you one, get the best you can, but if you're splashing because you think you need one, think again. Their only use is as a distraction in lectures. You'd be better off with a nice desktop for when you're at home IMO

    2. If you do want to get one, size/weight is much more important than people often assume. For programming you want a large screen, but lugging a 17" would be a nightmare. Look for a 13/14", much more manageable. If you need a larger display hook up to one of the monitors in the labs.

    3. Battery can be important, only Lloyd has sockets, you'll be there a lot of the time, but not all, and not for 2hr sessions of Java.

    4. 3/4GB of RAM, more is overkill for most, less would be silly.

    5. Middle of the road i3 would be enough power for most applications.

    6. GPU, this is your call, gaming + laptops is a usually not worthwhile. The extra expense for a little bit of BF between lectures really isnt worth it IMO. To get good gaming spec you're looking at €900 plus, 1500 for any real power. People try go for "some gaming" and end up wasting cash, either go for it or dont, playing your favourite FPS at 15 frames with all the textures at super low is no fun at all.

    7. HDD: Easily changed so no biggie, I have a few installs on mine so I have a 500GB, but its usually 1/3 empty. 320GB is usually fine.

    8. Brands wise I'd look at Toshiba and Dell, maybe HP. Dont go near Acers eMachine junk, and Sony Vaios are great, but only if you're loaded.

If money isn't an issue, get a macbook. I don't like Apple but they're the best laptop around. The latest air is very fast and light. The pros are great too if you want a faster laptop.

If money is an issue, don't bother getting a laptop. You don't need it.

If money is an issue and you want a laptop I like this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Asus-Netbook-battery-Windows-Premium/dp/B003V4AS4K/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1315316796&sr=1-2

It's thin and light, decent screen. You might be able to get a cheaper one but 12" screen is the minimum that's comfortable to use.

    7. HDD: Easily changed so no biggie, I have a few installs on mine so I have a 500GB, but its usually 1/3 empty. 320GB is usually fine.

I would definitely consider an SSD. They are way faster than HDDs, consume less power, are noiseless and are shock resistant.
    8. Brands wise I'd look at Toshiba and Dell, maybe HP. Dont go near Acers eMachine junk, and Sony Vaios are great, but only if you're loaded.

Wouldn't go with Toshiba, they're not bad but Toshibas usually don't have very good displays. Dell is pretty good. I can only agree with the Acers. Acers usually have crap quality and terrible displays. They might seem cheap for the hardware in them but its only logic that Acer must have saved in other places.
If money isn't an issue, get a macbook. I don't like Apple but they're the best laptop around.

Can't agree on that, if it hadn't a glare display you might've been right. They're pretty good but not the best.

I think that this is a good Notebook:

    http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Schenker-XMG-A501-Notebook-Clevo-W150HRM.53559.0.html

SSD, middle-class CPU, middle-class GPU, decent battery life, great display (Non-glare).
