I am replacing my sky set up with a Humax foxsat HDR which will give me the freesat channels , twin tuners, 7 day epg and much the same functionality as the sky box.
I am then going to replace my old tv with a new saorview enabled model.
I am wondering how can I then record the saorview channels on that set up ?
Do I need to buy a separate saorview box that has pvr and plug in an external HD and then have 3 remote controls. Seems messy and maybe I'm missing something.
I would be grateful for any advice.

It seems messy alright, I'm not a fan of Saorview
because you can't record it like a Sky box, but it's free I suppose but it's not for me.

Buy a TV with PVR functionality built in, LIDL and ALDI have it on some of their TVs, so a good brand should probably have it too. It's worth paying a little extra for the TV, to get rid of the extra remote a seperate saorview box would need.

Have a look at this thread
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056324709
It is referring to this device:
    http://www.adverts.ie/tv/digital-tv-adapter-stb-for-irish-digital-service-saorview/714023

This tiny set top box for €45 doesn't record on its own, but has a USB socket for connecting an external hard disk. Another €50 to €100 should be enough to get a disk with a 100+ hours recording capacity (NB disk must have its own power supply). This is what I have done and I'm very satisfied with it. The device gives crystal clear picture and sound, and full EPG - though not full teletext in all cases. The only gripe I would have is that my hard disk is a bit noisy when recording, but it's a cheap disk and is much quieter during playback so I can live with that.

(I don't have any connection with the seller!)

I have same,ie, Humax and Samsung TV. I cannot record from tv, but if you are buying new one get one that you can record from.

I do have a Saorview box in another room, (Digihome from Power City), which works great and is easy to tune. It does record fine, but, (always a but), you can only record what you arf watching or set recorder to come on. In other words, you cannot watch one station and record another.

Thanks everyone for all the info. Wasn't aware of pvr tv option, will check it out.
Just one thing. Hadn't thought of the recording/watching restrictions. As TC says you have to watch what you are recording with the saorview box. Are all the new saorview channels on the same mux and if so can I watch say RTE 1 while recording TV 3 ?

    It depends on the box.
First, boxes (generally) have only one tuner so you can only record from one mux. With some boxes you can record one and watch a different channel - my box does (referred to above) but not all boxes do.
Second, there are restrictions that restrict the recording because of content protection systems. These normally only apply to HD content, but can apply to any programme that has the flag set.
Third, most PVR systems can be a bit clunky compared to the Freesat and Sky systems, particularly as RTE are not using the series info.

You could use a separate saorview box for recording or watching separate terrestrial channels at the same time. If I was going down the route of another box , I would consider a DVD recorder with a built in hard drive that has an mpeg 4 tuner. It would probably cost over €200 but you wouldn't have to buy a separate saorview box and external Hard disk drive. You will probably need a dvd player anyway and maybe you could save on the price of the TV.

Some brands like Samsung have a tv remote that will work the TV and their other products.
