So, I got chatting to a guy while out on Friday night. Nice guy etc.

We've arranged to meet for coffee today, but in his texts he was all "nite" and "ur" and "r" and "4" and whatnot.

Would this put you off? I'm always a bit dismayed when I see it, but on the other hand, he seemed intelligent enough when I was chatting to him in the pub.

    What say you, AH?

Yeah, it could just be habit. It's not like he sent an email in text speak or anything! :D

Good point. My folks use text speak when they text and I know they're not thick! :pac:

I thought a text message was the one place text speak was appropriate

If he uses text speak in the first love letter he sends you then it's time to give him the gate :pac:

I'ts fine in a txt because your typing with a numberpad. People who use it on the internet when they have a full keyboard available to them however are idiots.

Well, not so much now, I know text speak was started by teenagers trying to conserve their limited characters, so I don't think it's as much of an issue now. And his texts weren't that long like he had run out of room.

I feel sorry for him, you are judging him all ready and all because of a txt message.

I hate it! But then again it sometimes helps to fit your message into one text! So its cost effective in the long run! :P

I find it odd though that anybody over the age of 25 using it!

in a word yes, instantly puts me off and it makes me feel like I'm dating a school kid it's just weird. On the other hand I know someone I have no interest in any other way but in texts or chat it's like a different person entirely and I find myself longing for a message. I don't get it. She comes across as smart and sensitive in writing but is seems totally removed from reality and up her own hole in the flesh.

Valid point, although in fairness a lot of phones have qwerty keyboards these days and the cost of a text message that runs over the character limit into a double message is negligible

I find it a bit off putting myself. It seems childish. But it really depends on how much they use it.
The only time I'd use txt spk is if I need to shorten my message down to avoid sending it as two messages.

We ALL judge a little. He probably has made some judgements about me already too, and I wouldn't blame him for doing so.

Yes, that's the only time I use it too.

I would do it. If I text I pretty much always use 'text speak'. Not because of the cost though - just because it's quicker. Texting takes me too long anyway (crappy phone). I have better things to do than fiddle around with a number pad all day.

And what's the harm? Everybody understands what I'm saying. Is that missing vowel really that important to you?

He might see this thread and not show up.

Then you can start a thread and blame him for standing you up.

Txt spk was appropriate when everyone was going around with Nokia 3210's, not in this day and age when most mobiles have full keyboards!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,585 ✭✭✭✭Lady Chatterton

OP, give the guy a chance. I feel that text speak is acceptable in mobile text messages but if he was using it in emails and cards I'd be turned off.

well what I've learned from this thread is...text speak is not for texting, and I need a new phone
in this day and age when most mobiles have full keyboards!

True, but if you're sending webtexts you have to work with a limited number of characters.

Only one I tend to use is ur. Just a force of habit in texts cause when I'm typing you're quickly adding the apostrophe always messes it up somehow.

I know but you are on here taking the piss out of him, not on in my book.

I hope he stands you up.
