    Hi,
Just wondering what the best way to burn turf to get the most heat from it ?

I've a multi-flue stove ( which I'll be mainly using) and an open fire.

Should i leave the grate in or take it out?

On the stove there are vents top and bottom and a flue damper, which should be opened or closed?

    Thanks

I presume you mean "multi-fuel" stove?

FWIW, we burn turf in the stove. The top vent is normally an "air-wash" which keeps the stove glass clean. This should be the last vent to be closed.
Close the bottom vent first and then close the top vent (if necessary) to the desired position to get the heat you need from the stove but bear in mind that if you close it too much, then you will possibly blacken the glass.

In relation to the grate, I presume you are referring to the open fire. I can't think of any circumstance whereby you would be advised to remove the grate from the stove and tbh, I cant think of one for the open fire either. So, my advice would be to leave it in and use either the stove or the open fire as it was designed to be used.
