Just wondering do people reckon the last two years were a fluke, or are we in a particular medium term climate "phase" at the moment which will continue to lead to winters like this for a while?

I think if we get a depression of 992 hPa, centered about 200 nautical miles off the coast or we get Isobars, lines of equal atmospheric pressure, drawn every 4hPa (hectopascals or millibars) and areas of Low pressure are indicated then it is a possibility.

I have rather mixed feelings about it.
The Big Freeze was fun last year - for a few days. Snow days off, tobogganing, alien, beautiful landscapes, etc were all amazing and great fun.

Then after a few days came "When the hell is the gym going to start opening again" "Dammit I'm tired of being stuck in my house all day" "Better leave at 9 for that party at 11, sure the Dart takes an hour to get from Dun Laoghaire to town now" "No nitelink tonight, guess we're gonna get ripped off by taxis all week", "Have to cancel that trip, no way any of us are driving on country roads this weekend" etc etc etc

I really can't make up my mind whether I want it to happen again, or not. Opinions?

    It looks like it will.
We had similiar if not identical summers for the last 2 years. Same 2 winters it snowed. Money is on it will snow. But hey, this is Ireland. We get crazy weather. Always a chance it might skip this year.

    I just asked a meteorologist

He just jigged about, made noises like Bill Cosby on crack and said Happy Birthday to James who is from Balbriggan and is 8 today.

That's the last time I ask Martin King anything!

Year of snow, fruit will grow.
When a cow tries to scratch her ear, it means the rain is very near.
Ice in November to walk a duck the winter will all be rain and muck.
Onion skin is very thin, milder winter's coming in
Onion skin is thick and tough, be jay this winter will be rough.

Honestly did yee not learn science? Look at the onion skins, lads. The onions have the answers.

    Fire my good man :)
Of course if you live in a house that is. Apart from the fact coal isnt too expensive. Most garbage can be burned too. As its either cardboard or plastic. Everything, from a ceral box to a plastic bottle of milk can be burned. Fire throws out great heat. And the biggest aspect is its cheaper than gas.

God forbid Dublin gets another inch or two of snow again this year, The city seems to just shut down and RTE will compare it to the end of the world...

2 or 3 foot of snow in Donegal not a bother :)
