I'm due to have a look at a car this afternoon. The dealer had brought it in from uk and its now on irish plates. Its a 11 reg with 8k on clock.

Will a cartell or motorcheck on this irish reg bring up its uk history or do i ask the dealer for the previous uk reg and run that instead.

Any other advice or info you guys can arm a greenhorn with greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

Ask the dealer for the UK reg and do a HPI check

The Motorcheck €20 job will also check its UK history...........stopped me from going further last week on a write off!

A lot of dealers are bringing in new and nearly new cars from the UK as they work out a lot cheaper and better specced than similar cars here. Cheaper for them = more profit for dealer. Some of the VW garages have even got together to form their own company to bring in the likes if golfs and passats as they can get them a lot cheaper over there. I recently visited a vw showroom down my way and got the option of a new 2011 passat or a 6 month old uk import with 6500 miles with more extras with a couple if grand saving or a highline for similar money to the comfortline here.

I would always recommend a hpi check on any Uk car but you'll need the uk plate to make it easier to check. But to be fair a 2011 car will be unlikely to have mileage or much for that matter recorded against it unless it was crashed!!

Oh and lookout for cars with different warranty periods in the uk. I know vw's have a 3 year warranty in the uk as opposed to the 2 yrs here. Yes I know if it goes belly up in the 3rd year vw Ireland won't do much for you but if it was a serious fault a trip up north on a trailer wouldn't be the end of the world :)

So i'll just do the HPI or is motorcheck just as good......supporting Irish company etc.

It might be a minor issue but a UK import (mph speedo) will presumably be worth less in a few years.
