Nice churches in cork

Hello all,
I hope u can help me. I am looking for a nice church to get married in, in or close to cork city.
I am not a Cork native, although I have lived here for a fair few years at this point, but I don't really know any of the churches too well. My self and my fieance do like the Honan in ucc, but are not sure if we can get married there (as I think u need to be a graduate of ucc). Would anyone know of nice churches in the area? We like the Honan because of its lovely decorations, and because it is very old and classic looking. Any help would be appriciated, thank you!

Not being cheeky, but if you've lived in Cork for a few years, but have not been in many churches other than the Honan, why are you planning on marrying in one?

I'm not religious but have been inside most of them if just to admire the architecture and enjoy the atmosphere...why couldn't you do the same?

This is surely the easiest way to find out...

There's that church in gouganbarra - is that how you spell it? It's really cute - very small though.

Thank you very much we will have to go and visit it. Small or not it might be worth it if it's special.

Ah I know you'd think we'd know more of them if it ment so much but we've just been attending the same one for years now and as we have lost so many people of late we would just love to start afresh with new happier memories in a new church. Would love a church just as picturesque that would mean just as much.

I'm not sure if it's as easy as just picking a nice church. The PP there will likely be scratching his head at why you're not getting married in one of your home parishes or in the parish that you live in in Cork. I'd say he'd accomodate you though if you really wanted to.

That would be different for the Honan (I do think you need to be a graduate but it's worth a phonecall to be sure). Also the Oratory in Gougane Barra - whatever parish that's in looks after that but they would be used to people from outside the parish of course.

St. Peter and Paul's is beautiful is beautiful in the city centre. Also St Mary's on Popes Quay. That's a dominican chuch - the churches run by the religious orders might be better as they have no parish boundaries to worry about.

In the city theres not many that are particularly nice coming to mind. St. Finnbarrs hospitals is nice but not sure they do weddings.

Don't know how many guests you're having, but how about the North Cathedral?

The others are right though - some of the priests can get funny about marrying outside of your home parish. You should also know if you marry outside of your parish, you'll have to supply the priest.

Hi a bajanin,
Yes we have a good relationship with our parish priest, and he has said he would be able to marry us in a different church, so that is one less thing to worry about anyway!

I think I will go around to some of the ones recommended this weekend! We are planning a little over 100 guests, so didnt really want the church to be too big. Thank you all for the suggestions it is a huge help!

You definately have to be a graduate of UCC to get married in Honan. There's even talk of restricting or giving preference to couples who are both graduates due to its popularity and the sheer number of graduates.

The African Missions Churches are nice. Wilton, Western Road, and Blackrock rd. There's a nice little Church in Waterloo near Blarney.

Both bride and groom now have to be UCC graduates.

There are lots of little churches you could consider. Gouganebarra is very popular so preference may be given to locals/native Cork people.. failing that, you could always get married in a nice non-religious venue in Cork. I know of somebody who got married in Ballymaloe House recently. Ditto Barnabrow in EastCork. It is worth considering all your options.. and remember.. some priests are very direct on "LOCALS ONLY" policy. After all, the tradition of the bride returning to her home parish to get married is still very much key for most marrying clergy! Best of luck with the hunt.

The little church at Dromagh, near Kanturk is lovely. It's in Co. Cork but in the Kerry diocese.

The problem with a big church is that it can seem very empty,unless you plan a really really huge wedding!!

Just to let you know I recently booked my wedding in Honan for next year and only I went to ucc the groom didn't!
