wiki is the type of architecture and technology used to construct wikipedia. its based on the ability for users to create and edit content. lets break down the name; wiki because it uses the wiki system, pedia because its an encyclopedia.

people calling wikipedia wiki are wrong. people calling wikipedia wikipedia are correct

what you are doing is akin to referring to boards.ie as http://www.

People shortening words for no reason other than to sound like they know what they're talking about really annoys me.

    I pronounce it as "Wikapedia".

Just thought I'd let you know.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,247 ✭✭✭✭bnt

Yup: Wiki is the name for the technology - a website that anyone can edit, while Wikipedia is one encyclopaedia site built on Wiki servers. There are other Wiki sites, such as Conservapedia, Sickipedia, World of Warcraft Wiki, and so on. So if you mean Wikipedia, say Wikipedia.

what... no, I'd say "yes I love that site"

OP, no. It only annoys me that some people use it as though it were a credible reference.

LOL @ the OP - do you also get annoyed when people say Heineken instead of "Heino"? Or what about those idiots that say Spaghetti Bolognaise instead of Spag Bol?

If someone said 'I read it on wiki' they'd just sound like a knob tbh

The post I quoted is the equivelant of the argument that often occurs on AH when someone mentions "The Queen".

Everyone knows the poster means The Queen of England, but you always get someone who says it could be any queen.

I'm pretty sure if someone said "I read on Wiki", you'd presume they meant Wikipedia!
There hasn't been any such person since 1707. It's like calling her Queen of Liverpool or Queen of Ayrshire. She's Queen of the United Kingdom.

    I say Wikipedia.

    "The Queen you say?

WHICH QUEEN? You never said the Queen of England, you could be talkin' about the Queen ofDenmark for all I know!"

People say The Queen because The Queen of England is the most recognised queen. Its like saying "The Pound" or "The Dollar", The UK and US aren't the only countries to use Pounds/Dollars, but they are the most recognised. I understand your logic, which is right, there's nothing wrong with saying Wiki. But that doesn't mean everyone should stop saying Wikipedia.

To be honest I'm quite the opposite. I HATE when people shorten words. It's pure verbal laziness IMO. 'Wanna come in for a cuppa?' and all that sort of thing. It really gets my panties in a bunch:mad:

Yeah that did make me look a bit of a tool alright:p

More specifically though my issue is with how it sounds like the person is trying to sound cool or casual, it just sounds bleh. On the web it's common place it's almost expected.

I DUNNO maybe I'm splittin hairs, WATCHA GONNA do BOUT it;)

I hate it too. I also hate when people call this forum Boards instead of calling it Bo. Even worse is when people say Google instead of Goo.

Wikipedia for the site, I'd say 'wiki' if I mean it as a verb though.
