I'm fairly intelligent, but I hated school so much I've not got a whole lot to show for it. And lately, I'm very worried that the internet has shot my attention span to

I havent met anyone yet that I wouldnt class as intelligent. Then again I think it was Karl Spain that said "Theres a gobshíte in every group and if you cant see who the gobshíte is chances are its you" maybe I'm the gobshíte

haha. Just checked the poll results on it. 77% percent said yes. Would you ever go and ...

But its been established time and time again intelligence has more than one aspect. I could tell you so much stuff you didnt know about history, but yet be totally naive with people. Intelligence cannot be defined by one thing.

Doesn't everyone consider themselves somewhat intelligent, even if they aren't? Nobody would ever freely admit that they're a moron, even if all their behaviour points to it.

No, I'm pretty confident that I'm not particularly bright.

I don't consider myself a smart person, I'd call myself average. However, I do feel like I'm constantly surrounded by morons. Mostly family members...

People who get high in the LC and think they're smarter than you...My god two people stick to mind who have neither common sense or common knowledge, both being as thick as planks.

Agree, the LC is essentially a memory test, they don't teach common sense in school unfortunetly.

There is an obvious correlation between exam results and intelligence, people who do badly and claim they 'didn't put any effort in' are generally the people who think that they are more intelligent than they actually are.

    True.

Common sense is a bit like swimming.

You can't learn to swim from a book.

Well of course I would like to think that im intelligent but finding anyone to agree could be a struggle. Some of my friends and family are very intelligent, not always in the traditional sense, but still what I would consider very clever and competent.

There is different kind of intellect, I myself would be intelligent maybe not so much academically(maths was my down fall) but more so in reading people and sussing situations, I love when people start bull****ting just standing there listening to them trip over themselves, dealing with situations and having a bit of copy on can go a long way!

For the most part, but I do think schools favour the "average" kid more than either extreme. I knew of a few exceptionally intelligent people who went off the rails completely after the Junior Cert. Not handing up homework, skiving off, acting up, I think they just got sick of being the "brainy" kids in the class.

Or maybe they just got sick of being "kids in class" :pac:

I remember when I was in sixth year, there was this guy who'd always poke fun at anyone doing a pass subject he was doing honours in. Then one morning I heard him complaining about how his toaster wouldn't pop the toast up, and he had to use a fork to dislodge it. That was the day I realised that booksmarts might not be the best kind of smarts. :pac:

Yeah we did. This one is for those who are a bit slow.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 528 ✭✭✭Fozzydog3

its a strange one alright , I'd consider myself fairly well read and can hold a decent conversation on most subjects and like another poster said i can suss people and situations pretty easily but i left school at 16 (not so intelligent)

But I'd say 4/10 of the smartest (Academically) people I know are socially inept and frequently need stuff explained to them or fail to realize obvious flaws in their character

I'd consider myself average but can be really slow about some things. My father didnt have much of an education but is one of the most intelligent people I know.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,724 ✭✭✭The Scientician

I'm smarter than a little under half the population.

funny that, who'd have thunk it :p

It depends on what you mean by intelligent. I think I'm reasonably good at understanding and using information, but I usually fall a bit short on anything that heavily requires 'feel' or intuition.

I'd consider myself intelligent but there are more intelligent people than me say a few members of my family and some friends but generally my intelligence is similar to most of my friends and family if not a little brighter in some aspects of intelligence than them but for the most part there wouldn't be a major difference between me and them.
