FTO....Can't Get Insured

I swapped my van on Sunday for a 1995 Mitsubishi FTO. Unable to ring insurers 1st, I was stung on Monday when nobody would even quote me. I am really disappointed, not a boy racer, or anything, but I really like this car.

    My stats:

    28 year old
    Full Irish License 5 Years
    NCB 8 years

Married & wife has own car, Labourer, live in Dublin, have drive way.

I am gonna put car up for sale tomorrow unless I can get it insured. I won't pay thousands and any help/advice appreciated. The FTO is the GR 2 litre automatic version and I was giving a value of 2k.

I'd say you could probably half that value...

Here might be a good place to start

Did you ring the insurer or use an online quote? A lot of insurers won't quote a car of that age unless you ring. Have you tried ringing Axa and Britton Insurance?

Why do I get the feeling that this guy is with Quinn :D Really, you should have no problem getting insured on an FTO. I know of two people driving these cars who would have less experience and NCB than you.

Currently with Axa. I have yet to cancel my Van policy with them. I am not with Quinn and have not been for over 5 years. I tried Quoteme.ie and I rang all the companies when seeking a quote. I never rely on online quotes. I tried Goggins broker and 25plus.ie ( a member of quoteme.ie) and i tried AAinsurance too. Nothing. Axa said I need to be 30 before they quote on that car. My wife rang cornmarket to see if she could switch her policy to the car and they said (after a few hours of not calling back) "it will be a few thousand". They quoted my 50+ year old dad with over 30 years driving experience and no claims 1600 euro third party.

Go on to www.fto-ireland.com and look at the insurance section. It's possible to get a somewhat reasonable quote from a few companies.

Hi Johnos. Thanks for those links. They seem to be the same company. I got to stage 3, but it keeps saying "incorrect vehicle valuation" and won't allow me to proceed. The estimate is around €800, which I would pay with an excess of 3k attached, but I have a feeling it won't happen. WHen i rang quoteme.ie, they would not quote me on the fto.

Xsdirect is not a runner unless you drive something worth massive money.

    Untrue.

xsdirect specialises in "high risk" drivers OR cars.

It could be that you are driving a 100k Porsche or that you have a bad claims record or driving convictions.

Ive seen people with cars worth less than 5k getting policies with them.

The excess is 4k for men and 2k for women and their cover is rubbish as in there are little/no additional benefits.

Is that nonsense not illegal now after that EU ruling? Or has that yet to come in?

I'm pretty sure I rang XS on Monday and they said they only insure cars over 5k. Thought it was very odd. Maybe I will try again and tell them its worth 5k :)

AFAIK it comes into effect in 2012

Ask on the insurance forum there, you can definitely get insured on a GR, thats not even the mivec version, it shouldnt be a problem.

Its not that its worth damn all its that its a 16 year old Japanese import ie,a bad risk.

Auto Gr, I'd say 750- 900 if you sold it. Axa insured me on a 95 mivec one when i was 20 no problems after transferring my policy from another car, even got money back! but it was suddenly a high performance car come renewal, and i'd hardly call it that.

Your current insurer of the van must quote you. Just say you are swapping your insurance from the van to this.
If they refuse take them to the ombudsman.

Axa is my current insurer. Even before I mentioned the fto, they said I would have to cancel my commercial van policy and start up a new private car policy. does this sound right?

They then said i must be 30 before i can be quoted on an fto with them.

    Incorrect.

Commercial insurance is different from private insurance so its not simply a matter of transferring the insurance.

It is correct that you would have to cancel the van policy and start a car one, usually with a common renewal date.

They can refuse you as you are not within their underwriting criteria.

You can go down the route of getting letters of declinature from 3 other insurers which in itself is a painstaking process in order to force Axa to quote you.

This will take a few months then they will likely load the bollocks off you so its really not worth the hassle.

im going to ring xs and and aviva tomorrow. aviva quoted under 500 online, but their assumptions are that it is not a sports car, so this would likely be the thorn in my ass. quoteme.ie still not working even when i enter a value of €5001. If that fails, it's time to sell.

    @Tigger: Could I?

Didn't think about commercial. My bad.

Have heard a lot of people giving out about massive price increases on certain Jap imports in the last few months, most recently a 23 year old woman trying to insure a Toyota Vitz (yaris) could'nt even get a quote !!

Did you try 123.ie, got them to cover a 1998 MR2 for €260. Similar car to the FTO but i'm a bit older than you, that might be the difference.

i'm actually pretty disgusted by how crappy the insurance companies have been. No wonder so many people lie through their teeth to get insured on different addresses and in different countries, or as "named drivers" when they are the main driver. I want to get a gt500 next year, all going well, but there is little point if i cant get insured on a 2 litre fto.

I am also a little confused. When i enter the reg into the online quote system, it says my model is a GPX MI-VEC. However, when I rang mitsubishi with the chassis number, they said it was a GR model. Doesn't make sense to me. What do I go by?
