Volvo s40 boot lid will not open

A washed my Volvo S40 car with a power hose and I opened the car boot just after washing the car and I think water might have got into the lock or the micro switch boot release.
Once I closed the boot lid it has not opened since.

    Any ideas what is wrong?:(

What I have checked so far
    1) I got a new microswitch from volvo and replaced the old one but that didn't solve it, the boot still does not open.
    2) The licence plate lights use the same connection as the boot release and they are working so I don't think it is a fuse unless the door release is on a separate fuse?
    3) I crawled into the boot almost got stuck myself:D and checked but nothing seems to have got caught in the lock.
    4) Any idea how to engage and disengage the valet boot locking mechanism?

Other than go to a Volvo garage and get fleeced I though I would try all you petrol heads:cool: to see if any bright spark has an idea.

I guess you've let the car dry out now?
    You using key or remote?

It's probably not the case here but there is an option with some Volvos that if you lock the glove box a certain way (valet key) it'll keep the boot from opening.

I have exactly the same problem - 2006 s40 where the boot wont open except I have not recently washed the car, and the number plate lights are also out.

Pressing the boot release does not activate the lock at all.

twotincans - how did you get on with solving your issue?

Any one else have any ideas?

    Thanks!

    Valet lock (trunk lock)
Pressing this switch locks the trunk, even if the doors are unlocked. The trunk will remain locked even if the doors are locked/unlocked using the master key or the remote control.
    To use this function:
[*]Turn the master key to position II.
[*]Press the "Valet lock" button. An LED in the button will light up and "VALET LOCK ON" will be displayed on the text window to indicate that this function is activated.
[*]The function can be turned off (deactivated) by turning the ignition key to position II and pressing the "Valet lock" button again (the LED in the button will go out and "VALET LOCK OFF" will be displayed in the text window).

    Hi old_aussie

Thanks for your response however it is not the valet lock - on my 2006 s40 this is controlled by the lock on the glove box and is switched off :(

    Anyone else??

We've seen about 5 S40s in the past month with the same problem:broken boot lid wiring loom.
I don't remember the exact price of the new loom, but it isn't expensive.

I crawled into my boot and disassembled the trim to get access to the lock.
It seems the mechanism is broken(black plastic inside this )...there is no sound from the lock when unlocking with the key fob

My wife's 2007 S40 had exactly this problem last month.

Assuming that it's the wiring loom at fault, and that the wires to the lock mechanism are still intact, you can pop the lock open by :
    • Disconnecting the boot loom where it connects to the body loom, you'll find the connector if you go in through the back seats and look up into the parcel shelf area on the passenger side - the wiring is routed above the metal.
    • Applying 12v to the two heaviest wires through the connector. No colour coding in the loom so this is the only way I can describe it without having the connector in front of me. In my case a handy 9v battery from a remote control worked :D

Once you've got the boot open, you can disconnect the loom entirely and examine for breaks. I contemplated repairing it but as stated above, a new loom was around the 40 quid mark from Koping, so seemed silly not to replace with new.

    Hope this helps!

    Hello,

I have the same problem too. Can you please help me, where can the wires break exactly?
