Replacing smashed window 2003 VW Polo

My sister just called and said her passenger's side front window in her 2003 VW Polo (5door) was smashed. The door has manual (roll-up) windows. Luckily nothing else was damaged or taken, what is she looking at with regards to cost of getting it repaired? Should she go to a Volkswagen dealership or an independent garage?

If there's an alternative route worth taking (like buying parts and replacing the window myself) then that would be very helpful, but I don't have much experience of repairing, well, anything.

    Thanks

If you're keen to save on cost call the scrap yards for a replacement.

You could always give the secondhand part to a mechanic to fit it - but it's not difficult to do yourself. A second pair of hands will be useful

Does she have comprehensive insurance? If so, she probably has free glass replacement, but will usually have to use a company that is approved by her insurer.
