but they're already entering homes.an old woman woke to find a lad standing in black at the end of her bed...another woman said they are after cash..

Hope this would not happen in Dublin.

Someone said earlier what right do we have to call the rioters "scum".

Scum is too kind a word for some of these people.

*Quoted text taken from the Guardian's live update thingy.
Sky news reporter talking to an elderly woman who had her door kicked in and woke to find a lad dressed in all black in her bedroom. Absolute lowlife dregs of society.

Scary as it was, she has to understand that it was necessary in the fight against the oppressive state force known as the met. So long as a single gangsta, sorry I mean so long as a single revolutionary solider is harassed by the aforementioned oppressive state force we will continue the fight with our tactical drug dealing, mugging old lady's, looting and robbing. Vi via the revolution

A enormous blaze has engulfed Sainsbury's depot in Waltham Abbey, Essex. The warehousing appears to be the size of a football pitch and the entire store is ablaze and pouring thick black smoke. It is one of the major food depots for central London.

Good to see that this is very much a political issue and not people just running wild because they can.

A kid who just got beat up and is bleeding heavily is helped to his feet by a passing group who then rob him.

Jonathan Wald, CNN's London producer, says in Ealing 15 teenagers took over a bus, forced the driver out and crashed the vehicle.

Video of that fire in Essex, apparently it's a Sony distribution centre, not a Sainsbury's depot. https://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=10150256738506994
(NSFEars due to loud rap music lol)

Nice ninja edit, did you make your post about how it was black people who robbed him then watch the video and realise you should've maybe watched it first when you saw it was the white passer-by who stops and opens the bag?

I read a few earlier reports about children trying to hijack buses so they could drive them into things.

I cannot believe that there is such utter chaos.

The cops have given up. It seemed around 9pm the main news outlets decided not to mention new areas in London being targetted for a few hours. There's 8-10 areas of London that have been taken over completely. It'll be days before any accurate information is confirmed. Just about all the pictures shown earlier showed the cops standing by. Hell in Leeds they said earlier they wouldn't try to prevent looting, they'd just use CCTV later for prosecutions. Great tactics.

Why is the army not on the ground?

Why is the army not on the ground?

I was thinking the same thing. What is the process involved in calling the army in? Do they have to run it through the commons or parliament first or something?

Why is the army not on the ground?

Without meaning to be glib I assume it's because the rioters aren't Catholics in Northern Ireland.
One has to wonder if this is politicking to allow for allowing the police and government a free range in the future.

I would imagine they are going to have to call a state of emergency and bring in the army within the next 24 hours if this does not die down. I also have to wonder if they are working behind the scenes to crack the Blackberry network - this was a huge point of contention with the Indian government in the wake of the Mumbai attacks.

I dismissed the posibilty earlier but it looks like the police lost control long ago and it may now be considered.

There would've been no need for the Army had this been nipped in the bud. No plastic bullets or tear gas or anything else. It may not have cut things shorter but it would've prevented people thieving from shops then setting them alight with complete impunity.
In terms of dispatching the Army I'd love to know what actual consequences there would've been if they'd just put them out without following the proper process.
In terms of the proper process the destruction appears to be greater than any "terrorist" incident I've seen other than 9/11, so how they can't (if they can't) immediately move the army in is beyond me.

Before that though I'd like to know where the plastic bullets and tear gas were and where the police with firearms were tonight.

Once it kept happening and word spread that looting wouldn't be prevented and then the police confirmed they wouldn't even attempt to prevent it it was always going to spread.

I suppose the thought could be that if they put the army out, it may incite more people to take to the streets?

It's just amazing that this just gets worse by the hour.

By about 10 o'clock just about everyone including the so-called "community leaders" were out of excuses. There would've been no backlash from those who should have been protected and the vast majority of looters would've dispersed.

    http://m.guardian.co.uk/uk/2011/jul/29/young-people-gangs-youth-clubs-close?cat=uk&type=article

Interesting article in The Guardian ten days ago.
"Farewell youth clubs, hello street life – and gang warfare"

It doesn't take much to put 2+2 together

Also the police paralysis is why this is spreading - a euphoria knowing they can get away with it is infectious, viral.
i agree with the other posters - I'd say the army will be called in.

What will arise from this is a growing right-wing sentiemnt of the general public and why the **** not. Burning and looting hairdressers and Tescos as a protest against the system. GTFO.

They should unleash some of the dogs on them, lets see how fast they can run!:)
