cycling carlingford to dublin (ret)

need advice on a route , reckon l could get good mileage on the N1 to drogheda but unsure of the route volume of traffic from there to dublin, anybody done this and have any advice, doing in a day then return the next day. Is there an easy route backroads to dublin. thanks

there are plenty of backroads and you probably only need to come on to the old N1 to get across the Boyne. The coast roads between Drogheda and Dundalk are nice for cycling on.

Further inland, the terrain gets a bit hillier.

One route might be to go through hills of North County Dublin - to Ardcath - Duleek - Donore - Cross the Boyne at Oldbridge (the Battle of the Boyne Site - nice tearooms!!) - up through King William's Glen to join the road to Collon - Ardee - Dundalk - Carlingford.

Then back along the coast.

As it happens I did Carlingford(ish) to Dublin yesterday.

You want to Carlingford - Dundalk (inner relief road), Castlebellingham, Dunleer (this left turn is easy to miss so keep your eyes open), Drogheda - Julianstown - Balbriggan - Swords bypass - Dublin.

Took me 4hours 10mins with some stops for food and heavy showers.

There is not much traffic and the road is pretty much straight. The only issue is the surfaces can be quite buzzy for long sections. If you had 25C tyres i would use them.

my neck of the woods;) carlinfort to dundalk to castlebelligham turn left for annagassin to clocherhead to termonfeckin to baltray to drogheda lovely route feck all traffic ,
you could go from droghrda to balbriggan to naul to ballyboughal swing left to dublin few hills on that route but nothing major.
hope this helps have fun take rain gear money for the coffee stop
