WD live tv - to hub or not to hub

    If I already have a portable hard drive with all my photos and music on it, and ethernet connection beside tv, whats the advantage of something like the live tv hub over the version with no built in storage, assuming I can add more storage as I wish at a later stage? Or is there a better alternative?

    Following on from my previous post, I think what I need is an NAS attached to my router with the media streaming device at the TV in my living room, question is do I need a wired connection to access the files on the NAS or will them being attached to the wireless router mean that I can access them over the wireless network? Thanks :)

    Wireless will be fine, although full 1080p may be jittery, 720p will be fine

    The hub is newer (so might be supported longer with FW updates) and has nicer user interface and a few extra features. The chipset is pretty much the same as far as I know. Also the remote is bigger, the WDTV Live remote is a bit fiddly.

    Wireless should be okay but I recommend that the NAS have a wired connection to the router. You don't really want wireless both ways (NAS > Router and then Router > WDTV) because wifi can't send and receive at the same time. So throughput would be cut in half.

    Obviously it depends on the bitrate of the content, if you're just streaming SD content then it should be fine either way. But for 720p and especially 1080p you really need to consider your setup carefully.
