What motivates people to lose weight?

I'm posting this here instead of fitness and health because I want to hear the opinions of the average person not just health enthusiasts.

My friends were talking about weight and a couple of people who lost a lot of weight recently, the conversation then turned into how they always try to lose weight and give up after a couple of days..

So is there anyone who has los a lot of weight or is in the process?
    What motivated you?

For me - when I think about losing weight It's more of an "I want to get fit" thing than an appearance thing

I'm currently trying to lose a little weight, though I'm not carrying too much extra weight.

Basically I just want to be fairly fit and make sure I stay healthy.

I also think I'm getting close to the age where it's going to be harder and harder to lose weight, so I'm going to lose it now while there's not too much to lose and it's easier to do so.

It has to be an overhaul of lifestyle, get into good habits so it doesn't feel like a chore, but a daily routine that you don't have to think about doing after a while.
    Or so I believe.

Also, a good body is made more in the kitchen than the gym, so there's no use rewarding yourself with pies after a workout.

Because I've always had some amount of admiration for the seriously fit, strong, capable of the species, and over time that came to be scorn for those who weren't, and I saw too much of that mirrored in myself, so changed it, because I didn't like what I was, and knew what I wanted.

I like eating more healthily because I feel better afterwards
it's about habits at first then listening to your body after

i'm back to jogging again because i like it and because i want to be fit

so combined, it should do the job

I didn't like the way I looked and felt. The weight on my body didn't bother me so much but my face looked bloated and awful. I looked like a puffer fish. I felt sluggish and lethargic all the time. I put on weight because I went from working in restaurants where I was on the go all the time and mainly worked evenings and weekends, so wasn't watching much telly, to working in an office where I sat on my arse all day and out of boredom I'd eat crisps and all sorts of junk. By the time I left work in the evening I was so tired from sitting down all day I'd stop off and get a takeaway and sit in front of the telly for most of the evening. Takeaways and junk food are the devils food. The more of them I ate, the less energy I had, so I got lazier, ate more junk and kept getting bigger. I knew I was putting on weight and kept telling myself that one of these days I would go on a diet and stick to it (just not today...someday....when I get motivated...).

It was actually the dole diet that sorted me out. It wasn't until I no longer had the luxury of being able to buy whatever I wanted, when I wanted that I realised just how much ****e I was eating. Everytime I'd go into Dunnes or a newagents, I'd automatically reach for a "treat" but then I remembered that I was on a crappy budget and had to kept my money for more important things. The first week was torture. Without all the coke and junk my blood sugar levels were all over the place, I was getting headaches and I was a bit moody but that settled down after a week or so. I didn't set out to lose weight but because I had to properly plan and budget my meals it happened as a nice bonus. Not only did I lose weight but my skin was better and I felt better. I would never go back to eating as much ****e as I did and don't buy junk anymore.

I can see how people get overweight - it's something that creeps up on you slowly and by the time you decide to do something about it, your bad food habits are so ingrained they you aren't even aware of them and they are hard to break. It is worth it though and if you seriously want to lose weight STAY AWAY FROM DIETS. They are fads that do not work. The only proper way is to cut out all the ****e and eat proper meals you cook yourself. It's a hard slog but if you stick with it, after 3 or 4 weeks, that will become your new habits and with your renewed energy you will get the motivation to stick with it. Have realistic expectations. You will not be losing half a stone a week and any diet that promises you this is bollox. It takes a few months but it is well worth it.

I didn't mean to post such a long reply but typing keeps my fingers slim and toned :D

Lost a stone in the last couple of months. Gained some weight after a stressful year, which wouldn't have concerned me too much, but I work with teenagers that tend not to be the most empathetic or diplomatic of creatures :) (Are you pregnant miss, or are you on steriods?) Ah well...

    Being fat?

Falling in love was what motivated me. I went from 220 to around 140 in a summer (May to August) and permanently altered my metabolism so much that even lifting weights every day and stuffing my face at every possible opportunity, it took me almost 5 months to get it back up to a healthy level.

I would disagree. I've lost 1.8kg in 3 weeks from walking regularly, and I haven't changed my diet at all, and it wasn't good to begin with.

for me what makes me want to lose fat is from seeing my stomach bunch up when i sit down, not attractive. i'd like to be able to jog without it being a big deal, but realistically if i get to losing all the fat I want to lose, I won't work much harder, only to keep it off.

Not being happy with how you look. That's all the motivation I'd ever need.

Dont think there is much of a connection between fitness and weight. I know a few very fit obese guys. Not sure it's about getting laid either. You won't automatically attract the women just because you're thin. It's about being happy with your weight and confident. For me and probably most guys that means losing the belly. It is something that I was always conscious of while I had it.

Feeling better, looking better. I lost 3 stone in the past year. Im not on a major diet or anything, just regular exercise and eating normally and it slowly has been falling off the past 12 months. I went from pants size 36 to 30 :)

You feel like absolute sh*t when you're overweight, you also feel really unhappy with the way you look. Every time you see that belly just hanging there.

I still eat like an absolute pig on weekends though :D

Vain as it sounds, physical appearance was the main motivator for me. Getting fit and strong are great too obviously but the thing that got me to finally stick to a low fat diet and exercise was really just being happy with what I saw in the mirror. I had a bloated head, moobs and was generally rounded in appearance. Clothes always looked bad on me, never wore T Shirts. One day I went shopping for jeans and couldnt find a 38" waist that I was comfortable in so I bought the 40" pair. That was a low point. Still have it, its like a tent!

Lost 2 n a half stone since then. Still abit to go, but I feel 10 times better than before so Im motivated to keep it up now.

I lost a stone, then gained half of it back and sat around that weight for a year or so, then I went away, ate all around me and am currently half a stone heavier. I feel horrible, my clothing feels tighter and it's not fun.

I wasn't feeling great lately and had to have some tests done so I figured I would go on a diet one I knew what was wrong and I was better.

It turns out I have a chronic disease (crohn's) and one of the management techniques is good diet and exercise which helps when there is an attack/flare up, so my body is stronger.
I'm on steroids at the moment, so I'm all over the place in terms of energy going from "LETS CLIMB MOUNTAINS" to t"he remote is there? my arm is never going to move that far" in the space of a few minutes.

I've started to eat healthier and am going to start exercising soon to get myself in good shape.
Partially it's beacuse it will make me stronger to fight off any problems and partially it's because I feel fat/gross/uncomfortable in my clothes at my current weight.

Health issues I'd imagine is up there.

Obesity is a serious drain on the healthcare system.

It gets annoying when you've a few extra pounds. I recently lost over a stone and it wasn't all that hard tbh.

I just ate smaller potions when I was hungry (no chips, crisps, etc), cut down on the beer, and did a bit of exercise.
