To put a floor under the property market the tax on investment properties should be abolished. Its enough to tax them when they are built / sold / rented.

On peoples own homes, people paid stamp duty when they bought them...often a punitive 9%. People also pay tax on utility bills eg electricity. Thats enough tax. The government already taxes income, gifts, inheritances, capital gains and also has vat, excise tax, dirt tax, etc. No need for new taxes. Look at expenditure instead. Cut public sector expenditure, social welfare + pensions south of the border to the level north of the border. Save over tens of billions of euro a year ...instead of futering with a property tax to try to get a fraction of that.

Yes once again your willy is bigger than mine so cut a piece off yours.

    Very fair tax - NOT!!!

    6 bed detached mansion in Dalkey/Foxrock €100 - family of 7
1 bed apartment in Athlone €100 - family of 1

    Crazy!
All tax should be fair and equal

Stamp duty on said mansion was 250,000

Thats a lot of hundred euro yearly payments .;)

No need for more property taxes. Just cut government expenditure. Problem solved. Slash waste in the public service like xmas shopping hal-days, 70 days fas holiday pre-retirement perk, half hours to cash non-existant pay cheques etc etc ....not to mention net surfing.

A flat rate across the board. Say €200.00

Adjusted upwards per sq M. Say €5.00/sqM

Adjusted downwards according to how far from civilisation you live. CS mileage rate reduction for each Km distance from local Phone Exchange

Adjusted downwards according to how many scangers live nearby. Reduce by the cost of one Dutch Gold for every scanger living within 250M.

So, people in big houses in Dalkey pay more than people in big houses in Finglas. People in small houses in Leitrim pay less than people in big houses in Leitrim, but about the same as people with small houses in Tallaght.

Maybe I should run for local Govt..........:pac:

Most economists and analysts agree that a land / property tax is a good idea.

Too high income taxes are bad, as they distort the labour-leisure decision.

So property taxes are better, as they cause less distortions / deadweight loss to the economy.

How you design a property tax is debateable.

Some suggest a Site Value Tax, others suggest a Land tax.
