Opening SMS & Don't want to reply

I find this really annoying. Whenever I open a text, the screen is half taken up by the keyboard / reply option. To get rid of this I have to close the message and re open. Look at what I mean. I cannot find a setting to turn off this feature IP 4, 4.3.3

IP 4, 4.3.3

in iOS 5, you will be able to swipe down to close the keyboard...

Tap the edit button and the keyboard is removed. Not ideal, but...
