Oh I knew them before they were famous
I preferred their early stuff before they sold out to commercialism and went mainstream

In defense of mikemack he was referring to the pseudo intellectual muso's who try to be as obscure with their taste as possible where the obscurity of the music is of more importance than the quality. There is a falseness and vanity to this.

I spend a lot of my days listening to music and and am constantly looking for new artists but I try to be true to my own taste and have plenty of guilty pleasures, I don't think its fair to extrapolate his argument to the point where you can't have an opinion on anything that's a bit of a leap.

In my opinion there are worse things than music that can influence your life too much, its all about getting the balance right I suppose

You don't really know how his comment was intended in fairness. He didn't mention "pseudo intellectual musos" in his post, just those who supposedly "name drop" (which much of the time is just naming bands that other people haven't heard of and not Katy Perry). I used to be accused of being a "music snob" when, in fact, I was just very passionate about listening to and playing music. I knew what I was talking about at the time...others thought I was being pretentious. Some people are just very passionate about what they like. Yes, I agree, there's those pretenders out there but when those of us who just happen to adore music are labelled pseudo intellectual musos or music snobs, it bugs me. Many people I meet who talk about music actually know what they're talking about, at least those over 23. It's pretty childish to pretend.

Me. I'm a musician, most of my life revolves around practising, going to gigs, playing gigs, organising gigs.

Most of my friends are people I've met through the local scene from playing with them or meeting them at gigs.

Nothing wrong with being influenced by music. Loads of people dedicate their lives to football or GAA, or even "God". No difference.

    Im a musician too
I remember one of my friends when I was a young teenager saying "but you dont look like your a musician!"

so I grew hair down to my chest for years

    Shouldn't it read...

People who let the music industry influence their life too much?

I wouldn't begrudge someone for wearing a band t-shirt or whatever. I don't wear anything like that myself, but the music I love certainly impacts my life in other ways. I'm a massive fan of jazz, soul and hip hop, and these types of music are a part of my everyday life. I'm sure that aspects of it seep into my attitude and dress sometimes (although it's not conscious). However, someone who goes out dressed in a band t-shirt, or grows their hair long or whatever, it doesn't really bother me. Yes, they're making a statement about what kind of music they're into, but what's so wrong with that? Music is hugely important to a lot of people, it's just an expression of how much they like a certain kind of music. Doesn't really bother me, to be honest.

    Also, if you're 14, sweet!

But if you're 40, stop dressing like a child.

Look at this gimp! He's a man in his 40s. He could have kids our age. But he still dresses like a 14 year old and, if you watch the video (i;d recommend the mute button) about a minute in you see him SKATEBOARDING!

Skateboarding? How fcuking dare he keep up a hobby he likes! Some twat, isnt he!?

Music has been one of the best things to happen to me. I got into playing trad about 2 years ago. Since I started, I've met dozens of brilliant people, a few of which I'd consider very good friends.

    Music's brilliant.

I do hope you looked like a mindless brain dead sheep of the masses, or otherwise you'd be a hypocrite.

The pop singers have become the new clergy in a new style of peer system.Like the clergy of yesteryear they don't have to explain anything just make people feel good and they'll follow them anywhere.Even to the grave by the 'live fast die young credo'.I knew one young fool years ago who seem to live in a phantasy world of pop songs. He had no other topic of conversation...he did'nt see 20.There are probably thousands like him.I wonder will the entertainment business ever be asked to account for it's effect on our young....like the churches it does'nt look like it..not soon anyway. The present generations are every bit as docile as previous ones i suppose.

where do you make this shoit up....

It's true. I've lost so many friends to Pop Music!

My friend tried it once at a party. Next thing you know he's listening to the radio and singing some of the words. There was nothing i could do! it was too late!

Last time I saw him he was dancing the Macarena! :(

I spend about 8 to 10 hours a day pretty much every day writing and producing tracks. I'm actually taking a break from working on one right now.

I love music, always have, always will. It was my earliest passion...before cinema, photography, sport...all the **** i love...there was music.

Everyone is going to have something in their life they are very passionate about and which influences them greatly...definitely nothing wrong with that.

Funny you should mention hipsters (I'm not a big fan of them either), because I heard recently from a friend that apparently it is now 'cool' among hipsters to be into old school hip-hop. This is what angers me about hipsters. Who decides what's 'cool'? And why does everyone just go along with it instead of making up their own minds? I'm sure there are plenty of people who don't like hip-hop and would never listen to it, only it's 'cool' now so they tell people they do like it. This is something I hate. These people don't give a f*ck about music, all they care about is being cool.

If you still do it in your twenties and thirties just tone it down a little. Which most people tend to do so it's all good. Good post Samich

Hipsters are fun to make fun of but if you find they are making you angry then I'd suggest you look for the deeper cause.

A shrink might even be able to help you.

Whats the difference between wearing a metallica t shirt and jeans with chains and wearing a munster tracksuit? nothing wrong with either.

You could also argue that there's lots wrong with both of them.

Each their own and all, but it winds me up when they try and shove it in your face. And it's part of the reason I can only take Fibber Magee's in uber-small doses these days. I find that it's pretty much just a cover up for a lack of actual, individual personality.

You're not misunderstood, you're boring, now stop thinking copying a famous metal act's image changes that.

To be honest, the dept they get into something will always be pretty shallow.

They'll never be able to drop a Brand Nubian verse.
