I spoke to a Polish couple who said similar. Its just so generous here.
They worked during the boom, have no job now. If they go back and are unemployed they get very little for three months. After three months they get 0 but retain their Medical cover. Aft that if offered a low paid Tesco job and decline it, they loose even their medical ! 0 + no medical = stay here.

They'll probably throw out a few Dutch people as well, hoping that no-one notices.

Has someone confirmed if they are kicking only eastern europeans out, or all EU citizens?

I would imagine it would have to apply to all non-Dutch EU citizens although no doubt it will be more vigourously applied to citizens of those countries whose EU membership has been more recent.

Basically, we have two choices in this country - (a) boot out all foreigners who are on welfare or (b) cut welfare rates for all including our own unemployed Irish workers, most of whom have worked all their lives here and have paid their taxes and PRSI.

How about we just kick out all the racists from all over Europe and give them their own country ? THat'll work won't it ?

Some of you seem to have real problems understanding the basic functioning of the EU

Right now the basic functioning of the EU is killing us. You seem to have real problems understanding that.

Holland is on a collision course with the EU over a threat to deport Poles and other eastern Europeans who cannot find work and withhold their state benefits if they don't speak Dutch

Could Ireland do the same here if Immigrants here can't get work and fail to speak Irish. :p

How long - approx 1 year.

Im not blaming the Polish for our govt. We spend 1/3 of Irelands income on SW. It cant continue as we are borrowing to pay it.

    2/3

We bring in about 34 billion and spend 21 billion on welfare.

They can be removed but there is nothing to stop them coming back the next day. They can be excluded from the country for a period, but only on the basis of public health, public safety or public policy.

Also, after 5 years they can get permanent residency rights.

Not having a job is not enough to exclude a national of another memberstate.

Not reading through 19 pages of ****e...

Has anyone pointed out that Ireland + UK are NOT in the Schengen area? We do not actually have as much freedom as people think, you can stay for 3 months but after that you have to show you can support yourself etc.

Conversely, we can travel to the UK without even needing a passport (ryanair aside). Also we can vote in UK general elections (if resident).

I don't think Schengen allows for deporting nationals - both Holland and Poland are part of the agreement.

It just means that, once your inside the area, you can travel freely without a passport. If you intend to stay for 90 days, you have to registe yourself, but that's just a formality if you're from the EU. And they certainly do not make income checks when that period expires.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Don't think they should be so quick to kick them out, but they should have to make some effort to learn the language.

The EU supports free movement of workers. Being on the dole for threee months makes you no longer a worker. It's a good idea.

some Irish live in Holland and don't speak a word of Dutch (or any other language than English)...

if Holland kicked them out and other countries applied the same, well, you wouldn't like it then!

    this thread is horrifying

Ireland and the UK are part of the Shengen treaty agreement. We opted out of the common visa system and common border, but implement many of the other provisions for example on enhanced police cooperation etc

The freedom of movement for EU citizens wasn't introduced by Shengen either, it predates it by quite a few treaties.

Shengen has more impact on non-EU / EEA nationals travelling within the Shengen area.

It has nothing to do with Polish people's rights to move around the EU. They are full EU citizens the same as the Dutch are.

I'm sure if ever the Dutch are broke and need jobs in Poland in 20 years time, the Poles will remember to throw them out too.

I think having a basic knowledge of english should be mandatory for all EU citizens wishing to live in ireland. I cant remember the exact figure but it up in the millions, the amount of money spent on translators in irish courts for non nationals.

If they do not want to learn English why should they?
Concentrate on keeping them out of the court not teaching them English if they don't want to be taught it.

'There is a growing discontent with labour migrants in the Netherlands, where Poles are accused of misusing the social benefit system.'

How sad and predictable. When times are hard, blame immigrants.
Not helped by a conservative government. So much for free movement in the EU.

Possibly a solution to this would be that you're not entitled to any social welfare benefits in another EU state unless you have been working and residing there for x amount of time-1,2,3 years? I have no idea how long but it would stop this situation surely? I know this is not allowed under EU treaty but treaties can be changed I suppose.

When the EU collapses soon every one will have to go home.

So we can welome back the thousands of Irish overseas to replace all the immigrants leaving.

The Netherlands has been taking some rather sharp lurches to the right over the past couple of years. So much for its famed tolerance.:(

To be fair, they're having significant trouble with Morroccan and Turkish communities wanting to have their rights respected but refusing to extend the same tolerance to others.

Lack of integration is key there. When immigrant people of any country create their own community and don't mix with the natives it always creates friction.
That said, politics is definitely shifting to the right in Holland, but it does everywhere in difficult economic times.
Some of the threads here are testament to that. People don't get so hot and bothered about immigrant workers (or welfare cheats) when times are good.
