I am going away for a week soon enough, I know I can go into the dole office and tell them that i cant get my money so they keep it till next week, but I havent a clue what to do about my rent allowance. Do they stop it for the week your away or is it like the dole and they keep it for you? Im presuming I have to go to the clinic to tell them Im away as a mate of mine recently went away for a week, told the dole office but they still cancelled his rent allowance as he didnt collect it!
Any help would be great, Im googling away here and cant find anything!

I just really want to know if I'll be stopped for the week I go away before going up, its rotten having to wait 3 hours in a queue just to ask one question!

Crazy as it is, I have been told that they stop it while you are away but the only way find out whether or not this is true is to check with the relevant organisation.

from what i have read you are entitled to 2 weeks holidays a year but you have to tell them when you are gone AND when you come back so you can receve your money
also they may ask for documents proveing you where gone ie tickets for plane

well, think about it. rent allowance is for people who can't afford to pay rent. If they can afford a week in tenerife, surely the money would be better spent on rent?!

I think I remember reading several threads on this board where people were told that they could take a holiday while on the dole. Is there one rule for people in social housing but a different rule for people on rent allowance?

Those in receipt of Job Seekers Benefit/Allowance are permitted to take a holiday, they are required to notify the Social Welfare office in advance, fill in a form and they will receive their on their return.

A holiday does not necessarily entail a trip abroad, it could be as simple a visit to family living in another part of Ireland or it could be holiday funded by a family member or friend.

Just because a person is unemployed it does not mean that they must remain prisoners in their own homes, despite some of the vile comments made about those, who through no fault of their own, find themselves reduced to poverty.

I would like to take this opportunity to remind those who post vile, smug comments about jobseekers, that the majority of people who are currently "signing on" were in full employment 2 years ago. I hope that these posters never have to suffer the daily humiliation that job seekers experience.

Agree 100%. Im luckily employed and have never been on the dole and i think its scandalous to say unemployed people should not be allowed ever get away on holiday. If they have saved a bit of their dole its up to them how they spend it. whats wrong with people out there?
im a taxpayer and i say go on your holiday, have a lovely time and dont listen to small minded bigots.

It might be a bit late in the day for this you have to go to cwo and tell them you are going on hols same way you have to go to dole office. when you come back your ra will be there including the time you were on holiday . At least that is the way it has been for me

I was only defending this persons right to a holiday, as others have. Some people wrongly assume a holiday automatically involves a passport and a jet, not so. Mayo for me this year !
