So, he was overweight and often went 12 hours without moving a muscle. His parents were obviously enabling his behaviour. Even if he could hold his bladder that long (which is very bad for you), he'd have needed to eat so someone has to have been delivering food to his chair.

I suddenly feel the urge to go for a walk...

It is awful that this would happen to anyone. M sympathies go out to his parents. He wasn't out racing cars, getting into fights or taking drugs. No, he was sitting safely in his room playing with a games console. This is frightening. I often spend ten hours at my office desk. Yes, I would shuffle over to get coffee occasionally but the rest of the time, I am using a laptop. Also, are we at risk while lying in bed? If I have been on my own, I have often spent the day reading while lying in bed or on the sofa...

    force feedback slendertone thingy

    or
maybe I should start a line of gamers socks

    or

just get pedals for the game

Sitting doesn't cause DVT in and of itself. Spending 12 hours a day on a PS3 is likely to cause other health problems just like any other inactivity.

Sitting for long periods when traveling can increase the risk of DVTs. This is most likely when one or more of the risk factors listed above are also present. - which of the other risk factors did he possibly have ?

    https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0001209/
Blood clots may form when something slows or changes the flow of blood in the veins. Risk factors include:

    *

After a pacemaker catheter has been passed through the vein in the groin
    *

    Bedrest
    *

    Cigarette smoking
    *

    Family history of blood clots
    *

Fractures in the pelvis or legs
    *

Giving birth within the last 6 months
    *

    Heart failure
    *

    Obesity
    *

Recent surgery (especially hip, knee, or female pelvic surgery)
    *

Too many blood cells being made by the bone marrow (polycythemia vera), causing the blood to be thicker and slower than normal

You're also more likely to develop DVT if you have any of the following conditions:

    *

Blood that is more likely to clot (hypercoagulability)
    *

    Cancer
    *

Taking estrogens or birth control pills. This risk is even higher if you smoke.

DVTs are most common in adults over age 60, but can occur at any age.

Sitting for long periods when traveling can increase the risk of DVTs. This is most likely when one or more of the risk factors listed above are also present.

It sounds like the sensationalist accusation of a negligent parent who did nothing while his son wasted his life eventually during as a result of his inactivity and wants someone to blame other than himself.

I know that if I played games for 12 solid hours back home it wouldnt be long before my parents were on to me about it and ifi ignored their request to get off the power lead would be swiftly pulled out. I find it hard to believe anyone could sit and play games for 12 hours without getting up every now and again to stretch their legs, use the bathroom, get s snack, etc.

Watch the video at the link and don't be such a clown. The father says he doesn't want to discourage gaming and he points out that its great fun for people who play. He is not blaming anyone

he just wants people to be aware and take a break. He is 100% correct. Whilst DVT is a low risk people can cause other damage to their bodies sitting motionless for hours. why do you think health and safety guidelines tell office workers to get up and walk around every so often.

Most people are well aware of the dangers of sitting around all day doing nothing. It's a tragedy that his son died but this is simply a case of someone looking to find a reason for his sons death and he latched onto the easiest target.

He played a part in his sons death, how someone especially a parent could allow their son no matter what his age to spend up to 12 hours a day gaming us beyond me. Surely at some stage any normal parent would have went in and taken console and TV away.

That doesn't explain your ridiculous comment

There's nothing sensationalist about the man. He is advising people who spend long periods gaming to take regular breaks. Most of them do not.

Furthermore he may have been a student and quite possibly did not live with his family. Plenty of 20 year olds do not

Now I aint no columbo but a 20 year old spending hours on end playing games online seems to me the kid didnt have much of a social life ... which is sad. still wanna make jokes?

Or how about this ... re-read the story and see how its not about gaming is bad but sitting on your ass all day and some poor kid died from it. So how about you be less "thanks whores"

    please go

It's sensationalism, another video games can kill article. Was he the only person unaware of the dangers of prolonged periods of idleness and it took his sobs death to make him aware that sitting in a chair for up to 12 hours each day is dangerous? I don't know many students who can spend 12 hours a day gaming, lecturers, studying, assingments and drinking don't allow for that much free time.

So now sitting or standing still for long period of time can kill you?

Fuck, everything can kill you nowadays!!

This is why I always try and raise my legs if I'm sitting for a while. Your legs should be quite high relative to your stomach/heart, which is the natural way for humans to sit (ie. as if we were on the ground). Of course I try to move about a bit as well, but especially raise my legs. The "perfect posture" way to sit is NOT the most healthy way to sit.

btw, when I saw this first I thought DVT was some form of exotic drug or headshop drug. Though, do we really need acronyms for everything?

Amy Winehouse died last week and boards members were quick enough to say "oh my god so sad" , "rest in peace :( " etc etc etc ...

But yet some random kid dies ... "am i meant to care?" is the response on here

    hypocrissy.

yeah, must go and listen to the gamer kids records now

In all fairness that's a very abnormal situation, I wouldn't be able to sit still without moving around at all for 3 hours let alone 12! I doubt many other people would be able to either.

    Haha.
Oh so because amy winehouse was successful and you may of liked her records. Her death means more than a random 20 year olds right?

Thought a random death of a person you never met is the same as the death of a person you never heard of. A death is a death. Its not like you personally knew either.

Think Noel Gallagher said it best:
"if it was my mother who died, no one would give a fu*k" - in reference to princess diana and people "mourning" her passing. Guess he is right.

Seems a Galway politician is trying to use this story to get some headlines, wants Sony and Microsoft to put a time limiter on consoles so you can only play so long.

Microsoft already did, a type of thermal limiter that would render the console useless if played for more than an hour.

Well theres a warning in every computer game manual and in the manual for the console so he has no one to blame but himself really.

Yes, because everyone sits down and reads the safety manual before putting disk in drive!

Really? DVT is something im sure alot of you weren't aware of before this happened. I knew about it, but not the finer details! Quite frankly a man has died here (dont call him a "kid" he's 20 FFS) and his father is just attempting to make people aware of the situation.

If your son or brother died from watching TV for 4-5 hours (which is enough time for DVT to set in) and a news reporter approached you wouldn't you want to tell the story so that it wouldn't happen again??

Jesus Christ people on here calling him a fat lazy kid and his father "sensationalist" need to stop and think for a moment.
I'm sure you've been on a long journey in a car, wont this knowledge now make you stretch them legs, just in case?

    Some people make me sick.

I work in IT...we call it the Widow Maker and by we, I mean I, I call it the Widow Maker...all that sitting. It's the new Planking :P

On a more serious note I've had pains in my wrists for 2 years and started going to a physio. Seems my shoulders and pretty much my entire upper body is out of whack. Let that be a lesson to you kids.

It's ridiculous putting time limits on games because of this.

1 guy dies out of a few hundred million gamers worldwide and suddenly we all need to create scare-mongering "awareness" of this.

I guarantee there were other factors than just gaming, like poor diet, no exercise. And before people say those factors were as a result of gaming, without video games people like him would just sit watching tv all day, or reading, or some other activity which doesn't involve an active healthy lifestyle.

What sort of 20 year old goes 12 hours without a fap?? Maybe all games should have a sexy scene after 1 or 2 hours play to encourage the increased bloodflow caused by fapping???
