Fitting Halfords Replacement Door Mirror on VW Golf MKIV.

Hi lads. Hit a bird on the motorway the other day :( and the glass on my door mirror was knocked clean out... I bought the replacement glass in Halfords, but it says to put OVER your existing cracked glass (i.e. it assumes that the glass is just broken).. Should I just stick it to the black plastic piece in the centre..…

Can't see it staying in place. What about replacing the glass and mounting ?

The genuine mirror glass from VW is only about 30 euro, got one for a girl in work last month, it has mount and the connection for the heating element too.
